The Dean of Atlanta sports never disappoints us Atlantans. He's a rough and tumble, former player, gonna-tell-it-like-it-is kind of guy... You can take the fan out of the Bronx and put him in the melting pot of Atlanta from back in the late 70's but you're not just going to whip up a "Homer" with an attitude. We're talking 40 plus years of non-stop, "romp'em-stomp'em" raw professional criticism that never fails. You may not always favor Beau Bock's opinions, but you sure as heck appreciate what he's seen and what he wants us to know. Here's the real deal:

Did You See the New Sign..?

 Wednesday November 5, 2014

Yesterday, as I approached the boiler room (locker room) beneath the Butts-Mehre Building, I had the sense that something was amiss...Y'know the feeling that something is different...I looked around and, BAM, there it was, right above me...It was a newly installed white sign with red lettering which said, 'DUE TO NCAA REGULATIONS, SOLICITATION OF AUTOGRAPHS IS PROHIBITED ON ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION PROPERTY'...!

I was on my way into Mark Richt's weekly game review, and preview of Kentucky...I had a premonition, but held out hope that perhaps, because of how we played, today's questions would be more substantial that the usual, 'What'd you have for lunch, Coach..?' They were not..! Turns out the new sign was the most illuminating highlight of the journey...Oh yeah, there's also been progress on route 316, the beeline to Athens, which means you can now bypass one traffic light through Lawrenceville; and therein, lays the state of our State... If sports are the indicator of our mental condition, then it's no wonder we can't finish roads, because we can't finish games, and we can't finish games because we can't finish programs, and we can't finish programs, and perform to our capabilities, because we are devoid of leadership (Hey Governor Deal, you got my vote only because of the alternative...C'mon, let's GO!)...

This will sound unfair, because our Falcons' Mike Smith is totally overmatched, but between he and Mark Richt, you could find more demonstrative leadership in a Chuck E. Cheese operation...Mark Richt is a good solid football coach, but his inability to approximate our potential is derailed by his lack of DEMONSTRATIVE leadership ability...Had he even a modicum of leadership phinobolies, he never would have allowed University President Michael Adams to interfere with his program...It only cost us a National Championship..! Between Richt's rules which don't get me wrong, are good; but the point is, players try to adhere to them out of respect, instead of having to 'absolutely' follow them out of fear..! Kids today, actually kids of every time and era, are too rambunctious and full o' pee and vinegar, to quantify rules...They can't make subtle decisions between right and wrong, and that's why the Marine Corps features Parris Island Drill Instructors (DI's) ...!

Forgive me for this (ya' gotta work with me, sometimes), the only difference between training for war, and training for a gridiron battle at this level, is death! You train similarly, because the object of the exercise is absolute; prevent 'them' from crossing 'your' line of demarcation...Our entire market is soft, as Kenny 'The Shrink' (fellow member of this club) mentioned to me in response to an earlier commentary:

'Beau,  We are a soft market period, in many ways.  And the cost of not addressing the reality of our aggression and its sources is tragic.  We are soft in electing representatives and in turn, look at the sad shape of this 'city' and its lack of adequate means of transportation.  Our 'niceness' allows corrupt folks wheel and deal unmonitored and then the people pick up the mess. Similarly with sports, we allow the rich kingpins to make sport their folly, have frivolous good fun and then laugh about it: and watch others win.'

Our entire sports community needs a valentine transplant..!
