Watch out for Turtles!
Turtle Crossing Sign
Ontario turtles are on the move, and under threat. The Ontario Turtle Trauma Centre reports that they have treated around 600 injured turtles already this season. Read CBC coverage of this issue.

Ontario has several native turtle species threatened by habitat loss, poaching, and road mortality. May through July is often when you'll see turtles crossing roads and laying eggs on sandy or gravel shoulders of rural roads. FOCA encourages drivers to pay attention, and slow down, especially on cottage country roads.

For tips on moving a turtle off the road safely, you can download "Turtle Handling 101" from the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre, by clicking here. (PDF, 1 page)

Invasive Species Projects are Underway
This summer, FOCA is working with several member Associations on Pilot Projects aimed at addressing aquatic invasive species at the local level. The projects focus on education and outreach, and/or invasive species control, management and eradication.

These Pilot Projects are part of FOCA's work with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry on invasive species prevention.  Invasive species are one of the top threats to the integrity of aquatic ecosystems, to the quality of the recreational experience on the water, and to the economic success of rural communities.

Pictured at right: the LakeSmart boat is delivering invasives information and other healthy shoreline messages to local docks in the Lake of the Woods district!

We will keep you updated about these projects over the next while. For more on the topic of invasives in cottage country, consult FOCA's guide:
