SMSDC News                                    July 2018
From the President's Desk

I would like to personally THANK all of you who attended SMSDC's 2018 Premier Face Time Expo, June 6th - 8th in San Antonio, TX.

And, our sincerest THANKS to our Title Sponsor,   Toyota  for their continued involvement and support of SMSDC's Premier Face Time Expo,   "Innovation & Technology for the Future"  and the   Association of Electric Companies of Texas (AECT)  for their collaborative initiative with the SMSDC.
We received numerous compliments from those MBEs in attendance on how well the information was presented and the relevance to their businesses.

To kick off the three day event, the SMSDC held their annual Premier Face Time Golf Tournament on Wednesday, June 6th at the beautiful Resort Course at La Cantera Golf Club. Beginning with a Shot Gun Scramble at 8 a.m., golfers enjoyed the exquisite greens, inspirational views, networking and a great round of golf.  The networking continued over a delicious lunch concluding with the awards ceremony.

On June 7th, the Premier Face Time Expo was kicked-off with our featured Developmental Plus Program: Benchmarking Plus for Corporate Members and Capacity Plus for Certified MBEs. The Plus Program, only available at SMSDC, has been providing invaluable information since 2012 to all of our Corporate Members and MBEs. The program is presented by Reginald K. Layton with JCI, a leader in Supplier Diversity.

Following the Plus Program classes, we celebrated the commencement of the conference with the Opening Chairman's Reception. During this reception, we brought back MBE "Idol" for our Certified MBEs. Thanks to our judges; Michael Hayes, ALDEZ CONTAINERS Shawn Green, CONOCOPHILLIPS Sheela Ooi, DELL Alex Payan, EL PASO ELECTRIC Debbie Trevino, TRECO SERVICES.

Each of the following presenters did an excellent job.

Representing Austin - Brian Fontenot, Elevation Firm and Jacky Washington, Requested Personnel
Representing El Paso - Beatriz Fernandez, DataXport.net, LLC. And Representing San Antonio, Nippy Betz, Scholarship Leadership Institute.

We are excited with the feedback we received and the number of MBE's as well as Corporate Members who established invaluable connections during the Buyer's Breakfast Roundtable (BBR). Our sincere thanks to all who participated in this year's BBR, the highlight of our Premier Face Time Expo. The Expo was over capacity with 40+ exhibitors who showcased their products, services and solutions to over 200 participants which included corporate CEOs, procurement executives, supplier diversity professionals and MBEs interested in engaging in business opportunities.

And a special thank you to the following executives who participated in the Supplier Diversity's Role Fostering Innovation & Capacity Building Luncheon; Randall Anderson, General Manager, Purchasing Supplier Relations, Toyota; Guy Schweppe, Vice President of Procurement of Dell; and Reginald K. Layton, Vice President, Supplier Diversity & Supply Chain Sustainability of Johnson Controls Inc. The entire dialogue was engaging and thought-provoking.

Following the luncheon panelist session, was our exciting Awards Ceremony where the winners of Corporation of the Year, Suppliers of the Year, and Advocate of the Year were announced.

Congratulations again to:

OnSite Contracting, 2018 Supplier of the Year,
Class II

Maldonado Nursery and Landscaping, 2018 Supplier of the Year,

Overall, the three day event was one of the best ever! However, this event would not have been possible without the assistance of our volunteers. Thank you to all of our volunteers from Treco Services. We know your time is extremely valuable and we are very grateful for your help! We would also like to thank all of the event sponsors and all who donated goodie items for our event.

See you next year at the 2019 Premier Face Time Expo, Awards Ceremony & Golf Tournament.

ADVOCATE
From your MBEIC Chair:

Innovation & Technology for the Future being at the center of the 218 Premiere Face Time Conference from June 6-8 in San Antonio, brought together an array of sponsoring corporations and MBEs (to whom we are deeply grateful for supporting SMSDC's efforts) as well as energy and utility companies, state agencies, Supplier Diversity professionals and engaged MBEs; for an exceptional opportunity to connect and learn from professionals and industry leaders about trends, where the market is going, including the Economics of the Marketplace; how Creative Ideas are Working for the Electric Industry (and how to be part of it), and how to develop Supply Chain, and capacity building and improving our marketing practices respectively, for corporations and MBEs.

The unique chance for corporations and MBEs to connect over a fun and enjoyable round of golf, the networking receptions, the chance to be under the spotlight talking about our small businesses in front of potential buyers, including state agencies during the MBE Idol Semifinals, to the Buyer's Breakfast Roundtables where MBEs were able to open or reopen the communication channels with corporations and agencies; provided more than one way to showcase what we do and how we are able to help buyers achieve their goals, and truly brought participating MBEs closer to opportunities.

These, among many other invaluable educational experiences, far exceed the cost of attending these types of events; demonstrating the value offered by being certified and putting our certifications to work. The takeaway? It makes us reflect on how many missed opportunities we may have had, and... What is costing MBEs not to participate in SMSDC's and NMSDC's conferences and events?

So, MBEs, let's not miss one more opportunity or more importantly, THE OPPORTUNITY to be at the National Conference in Austin this coming October 14-17.

Get ready to be there!

The Importance of NOT Letting your
SMSDC Certification Expire!

We frequently receive frustrating calls by our MBEs telling us their SMSDC/HUB Certification has expired. Once your SMSDC certification expires, ALL MBEs have to begin the entire certification process from the beginning. Please note, WE NO LONGER ACCEPT PAPER APPLICATIONS. ALL certification is now done on-line. There are no exceptions.

For those MBEs in the STATE OF TEXAS, in addition to beginning the entire certification process all over again, the HUB certification, which enables you to bid on contracts, is no longer valid. The HUB certification process is only done once a month. This means for those MBEs in the State of Texas, they will now have to wait an entire month for their HUB certification.

Please make sure to check the expiration date on your SMSDC certification. You will receive an e-mail notification from the AdaptOne portal which looks similar to the image above.

DO NOT ignore this e-mail. It is a courtesy reminder your certification is about to expire.
Please contact Michelle Veloz at
[email protected] .
