OCTOBER MONTHLY NEWS & UPDATES
You often hear the saying “work your way up,” a success story Lauren E. Edmunds truly embodies as she started her career with Meyers & Flowers at just 19 years old as an intern. Now over half a decade later, Lauren’s determination and ambition earned her the title of Associate Attorney at Meyers & Flowers.

Since beginning her practice at the firm she has taken on cases ranging from clergy sex abuse, a handful of auto accidents, tragic medical malpractice claims, some work with our business litigation team, but has mostly pursued her passion of handling workers’ compensation claims. In her 9 months as an attorney, she has earned more than $1,127,069 for her clients with her passion for providing fierce advocacy and standing up for the underrepresented being her driving force.
"When asked who has helped guide her over this past year, she immediately blurted, “Definitely Greg Booth! He has been my teacher, and Ryan of course. He has always been my teacher.” Ryan P. Theriault is a seasoned personal injury and workers’ compensation litigator having represented thousands who have been harmed by the negligence of others since Meyers & Flowers inception in 2013. As Lauren’s cousin, he filled family parties with stories about the profession and opened her eyes to the legal industry. From the day that she told him that she wanted to follow in his footsteps and go to law school, he wanted to show her what that truly means. “He’s taught me and continues to teach me everything I need to know about being a lawyer.”"

Recall: MiniMed 600 Series Insulin Pumps

This month, the FDA posted two updates to its past Class I recall of several models of Medtronic's MiniMed insulin pumps after the device was linked to 26,421 consumer complaints, 2,175 injuries and one death. The announcement comes after the regulatory agency’s discovery that the devices were incorrectly dosing insulin which could cause serious adverse effects that were not included on the pumps' label.
Investigating: Infant Formula Linked to NEC
Unfortunately, nearly all families impacted by NEC have one thing in common: they had never heard of the disease until they received the diagnosis. Necrotizing Enterocolitis is a life-threatening gastrointestinal disorder which causes a severe inflammatory process that can lead to intestinal necrosis, multi-system organ failure and death. Studies have shown the risk of premature infants developing NEC is substantially heightened when fed cow’s milk-based formulas, such as Similac and Enfamil.
Our team is currently investigating potential baby formula lawsuits on behalf of parents whose babies have suffered serious injuries or death after being fed cow’s milk-based formula to make sure no other family has to endure this preventable tragedy.

Meyers & Flowers is all in on celebrating Halloween (check out the treats from our Halloween office party above), but there are some risks to be mindful of beyond the candy and treats.

Halloween statistics are truly scary: Children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year. As children gear up to knock on doors, here are some tips to help make sure that both parents and drivers do their part to keep your trick-or-treaters safe.

  1. Use flashlights, glow sticks, reflective tape or brightly colored costumes to help increase visibility. A lack of viability because of low lighting at night plays a huge factor in these incidents. Nearly one-fourth of fatal accidents occurred between 6pm and 7pm demonstrating the importance of being well-seen during sunset hours.
  2. Teach your little ones to only trick-or-treat on one side of the road, then cross at designated crosswalks to grab treats on the other side of the street. Avoid bouncing from one side of the street to the other. Studies have shown the middle of the block is the most dangerous with over 70% of collisions occurring away from the intersection.
  3. Discourage new, inexperienced drivers from hitting the roads on Halloween. Young drivers ages 15-25 accounted for nearly one-third of all deadly accidents involving child pedestrians on Halloween.
  4. Make sure your child can see and walk properly in their costume. Have your child remove their mask when walking and only put it on when approaching a door. Kids will be doing a lot of walking so they will need to be able to see where they are walking to avoid tripping and allow them to better see oncoming traffic.

Stay safe and have a happy Halloween from all of us at Meyers & Flowers!
