What started as a small contest for a few Pittsburgh public high schools has expanded into a program that reaches hundreds of students across western Pennsylvania every year.

The 20th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Writing Awards will take place at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 21, in CMU’s Cohon University Center Rangos Ballroom.

Using cutting-edge statistical models to analyze data from nearly 2,000 families with an autistic child, a multi-institute research team discovered tens of thousands of rare mutations in noncoding DNA sequences and assessed if these contribute to autism spectrum disorder. The Department of Statistics and Data Science's Kathryn Roeder was among research team leaders. Lead authors included Kevin Lin and Lingxue Zhu.

Many courses throughout the fall 2018 semester culminated in capstone or final projects that focused on innovation, creativity and problem-solving.

U.S. Representative Susie Lee — an alumna of the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences as well as the Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University — represents Nevada's 3rd congressional district.

Lee earned a bachelor's degree in policy and management from the Department of Social and Decision Sciences in 1989.
