This semester, students in “Public History: Learning Outside the Classroom” went off campus and into Pittsburgh’s Senator John Heinz History Center—a Smithsonian affiliate and Pennsylvania’s largest history museum.

Their instructor was one of the people who knows the city’s history the best: Andrew E. (Andy) Masich (DC’14), the museum’s president and CEO.

CMU drew more than 600 students to present some of their best work at the 2018 Meeting of the Minds symposium, an annual showcase of undergraduate research.

Projects by Dietrich College students included everything from the linguistics of humor to student communication habits with their parents.

The first-ever Sophomore Declaration Dinner took place this spring to mark the students’ halfway point in their undergraduate careers.

"We felt it was important to bring the class together to recognize the importance of reaching the midpoint in their academic journeys and to celebrate together as a community," said Ana Maria Ulloa-Shields , director of the Academic Advisory Center.

Even before Kim Hochstedler received her diploma, she was racking up achievement honors.

Hochstedler double-majored in statistics and psychology and was active outside of the classroom. She received the Judith A. Resnik Award, was named an Andrew Carnegie Society Scholar and won the Dietrich College's Gretchen Lankford Award.
