Summer Undergraduate Research Fellows Take On Accessibility and Quality of Life Questions

Last summer, Dietrich students tackled research through a prestigious fellowship program offered by the university. Three social sciences undergraduates received Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURFs) to conduct research which goes beyond the normal curriculum.

Noelia Flores, a senior in the Psychology Department, examined how confidence affects children at the pre-school level. Allison Dayton, a sophomore in the Department of Statistics & Data Science, tackled how motor control affects the way we pronounce fricatives. Information Systems Program senior Veronica Pimenova dove into how learning platforms can support neurodivergent users.

What do a fictional character in a dystopian future and a historical figure from Pittsburgh's past have in common? Besides the name "Dorothy," both propelled two Dietrich College humanities students' SURF projects.

Samantha Mahler, a junior in the English Department, worked on a feminist middle-grade novel led by Dorothy Barros, a character inspired by Dorothy of Frank L. Baum's "Wizard of Oz" series. Ava Arias, a junior in the History Department, researched Dorothy Height, an unsung hero of the Civil Rights movement and her work in Pittsburgh.
