| | Laurie Heller Is Changing How We Understand, and Potentially Treat, Misophonia | | |
Throughout her career, Laurie Heller has listened closely — not just to words, but to sound itself. In the Auditory Lab at Carnegie Mellon University, the psychology professor explores how the brain interprets everything from environmental clatter to the subtle noises that can spark deep feelings of safety, connection, or in some cases, rage.
Read about Heller and undergraduate student Yuqi "Monica" Qiu's groundbreaking new study on misophonia.
You can also listen to Heller talk about her work in a special, double-episode of the CMU podcast, Where What If Becomes What's Next. Click here to listen to The Science of Sound: Part 1 and The Science of Sound: Part 2.

With an investment from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and additional support from the Simons Foundation, the Institute for Computer-Aided Reasoning in Mathematics (ICARM) — one of just six mathematics institutes across the U.S. to receive NSF support — will help researchers modernize mathematical reasoning to strengthen real-world problem solving in domains like cybersecurity, finance, space and health care.
