In today's design-build industry, it has become very common to find circuit setters sized to match the pipe sizes to every hydronic coil. This built-in balancing problem then requires using a gauge or differential pressure meter accurate enough to measure extremely low pressure drops. Oversized values may also prohibit balancing to AABC standards, which require leaving at least one value fully open.

For example, a recently completed project had thirty-six, 3/4" circuit setters requiring 0.9 to 2.8 GPM. This system also had two thermostatically controlled 3-way valves to maintain space temperatures, and a VFD-controlled hot-water pump.

Mike Kelly, TBE, CxA, American Testing, Inc. gave his presentation " Fundamentals of Test, Adjust, & Balance for Engineers, Cx & Energy Providers ," to a packed room at AHR Expo 2020 this month.
