Hope in Harlem Conference led by AADPRT Bell Award winner
Dr. Sidney Hankerson, inaugural recipient of the Dr. Iverson Bell, Jr. Faculty Fellowship Award and vice chair for community engagement at Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai, spearheaded the Hope in Harlem Conference featuring youth, sports, and mental health at the historic First Corinthian Baptist Church in Harlem, NY.
The event focused on the rising rate of suicide among Black youth and how sports can play a role in curbing this disturbing trend. Featured attendees included former NBA athletes Allan Houston and Derek Anderson, Dr. William Parham, PhD, ABPP who serves as the National Basketball Players Association’s director of Mental Health and Wellness Program, Dr. Nyaka NiiLampti, PhD who serves as the NFL’s vice president of Wellness and Clinical Services, and track star Natasha Hastings -- Olympic gold medalist, world champion, and USA national champion.
