A Reflection from Scott Hayes

Meditation for Holy Week

Each great feast of the Church brings its own familiar rhythm. The flower guild prepares special arrangements; the altar guild changes the hangings; acolytes serve in full force; choirs take on extra rehearsals; and in the office, bulletins multiply. It’s an offering of time and care from many people—and we are blessed at All Saints to have so many hands at work.

One of those offerings is our annual Good Friday Meditation. Some years, a single large work carries the whole service—Maunder’s Olivet to Calvary or Chilcott’s St. John Passion. Other years, we weave music more directly into the Good Friday liturgy. This year is one of those.

At the heart of our meditation is Heinrich Schütz’s Die sieben Worte Jesu Christi am Kreuz (The Seven Words of Christ on the Cross), surrounded by additional music and poetry. It will be accompanied by string quartet, oboe, and organ, with the role of Jesus sung by Jason Brown, Director of Music at Richmond’s First Presbyterian Church.

Bringing something like this to life takes many hands. The choir learns the music (with help from Ambrose Clark on German); soloists prepare their roles; instrumentalists are engaged and organized (thanks to Daniel Stipe); poetry is chosen (thanks to Megan McDermott); and everything is shaped into the liturgy (thanks to Ben Robertson). It’s worship—but it’s also a real production.

I hope you’ll join us in keeping Holy Week, day by day: Maundy Thursday (with dinner) at 6:00 p.m.; Good Friday at noon and 7:00 p.m.; the Easter Vigil on Saturday at 8:00 p.m.; and Easter Day at 8:00 and 10:30 a.m.

And if you see one of those many hands at work, thank them—Holy Week and Easter would not be what they are without them.

Soli Deo Gloria,

Scott Hayes

Easter Sunday Hospitality

This Sunday, join us for Easter treats and snacks in the parish hall following the 10:30am service! We invite you to bring something to share as we enjoy time together in fellowship. If you’re able, please drop off your item in the parish hall before the service begins. Thank you!

Flowering of the Cross: This Sunday at 10:30am

We invite you to bring flowers or greenery from your yard to the 10:30am Easter service to help flower our large cross. Help add the beauty of our Easter service!

Holy Week + Easter

Maundy Thursday Service + Dinner, April 2 at 6:00pm: Focusing on Jesus’s command to his disciples to love one another as he has loved them and his institution of the Eucharist to be shared together as a sign of our unity in Christ, this service will feature music, Holy Communion, a simple stripping of the altar, and silent procession out as we move into the solemnity of Good Friday. Following the service, we will gather for dinner in the parish hall.

Good Friday, April 3 at 12:00pm: This is the only day of the year in which we do not celebrate the Eucharist, but rather focus on the cross through the reading of the Passion Narrative (the crucifixion of Jesus) and a series of prayers known as the Reproaches. Our service begins and ends in silence.

Good Friday, April 3 at 7:00pm: Heinrich Schütz - Seven Last Words of Jesus Christ on the Cross

All Saints Choirs invite you to a deeply moving Good Friday choral meditation, a rare and powerful work by early Baroque composer Heinrich Schütz: Die sieben Worte Jesu Christi am Kreuz (The Seven Words of Jesus Christ on the Cross). This compelling setting reflects on Christ’s final words from the cross through expressive, prayerful music (sung in German), accompanied by string quartet, oboe, and organ. The seven words are sung primarily by soloists, many of them our own accomplished Choral Scholars, with the role of Jesus sung by Dr. Jason Brown, Director of Music at Richmond’s First Presbyterian Church. Join us at All Saints on Good Friday for this solemn and beautiful musical offering, as we enter together into the mystery and meaning of the day.

Easter Vigil, April 4 at 8:00pm: We gather in the dark, and the service features light and fire as well as placing the story of our faith in context through a series of readings from the Old Testament. We light a new fire, process the Paschal Candle (the light of Christ), we will proclaim that Christ is Risen and renew our baptismal vows, and we will celebrate the first Eucharist of Easter. The setting is very dramatic and while the service is longer than usual, it is very powerful. Bring some bells to ring when we proclaim the resurrection.

Easter Sunday, April 5 at 8:00am + 10:30am: The 8:00am Rite I Easter Eucharist will feature trumpet and the Choral Scholars and the 10:30am Rite II Easter Eucharist will feature a children's homily, a trumpet trio, and our full choir. Wear your Easter Bonnet and join us for either of these traditional festival services!

Children’s and Family Ministries invites children ages 3 through rising 6th grade to our Snowball Mountain Challenge, June 22nd–26th, from 9:00 am–12:00 pm. Kids will enjoy games, stories, and hands-on activities while learning to trust God and grow in faith through our theme verse, “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13). Registration is $45 per child.

Rising 5th and 6th graders are invited to join the week and participate in a mission-based program - students become scientists for the Kids Clean Water Project as they discover the global water crisis, how it affects kids just like them, and how they can help those kids receive clean water and hear The Gospel!
