A Reflection from Scott Hayes

An Invitation to Cabaret

Sunday, May 17 at 5:00 PM

In church music, you pick up a lot over the years—repertoire, choir management, fundraising . . . all the things no conservatory ever quite teaches. One thing I definitely didn’t learn in school? How to put together a Cabaret!

My first attempt came years ago in Ohio, when we were raising money for a choir trip. A creative group dreamed up all sorts of ideas: yard “flocking,” auctions, and finally a Cabaret. With help from a theater-savvy former chorister (who actually knew showtunes!), we pulled together a show that ranged from Beauty and the Beast to White Christmas—including a memorable duet by the Rector and Associate Rector in pink boas. It was magical, and the tradition was born.

Fast forward 16 years, and this will be my ninth Cabaret. All Saints has fully embraced it as one of our most joyful (and entertaining!) events of the year.

This year, we’ll keep things relaxed: a potluck dinner outdoors, followed by the show in the church. But more than anything, Cabaret is about fellowship and about giving our choirs and soloists a chance to let loose a little. It’s one of the few times you’ll see them step away from robes and anthems and dive into something completely fun and secular. Expect a few laughs, maybe a few unexpected moments, and a chance to see familiar faces in a whole new light, all while sharing good food and even better company!

Cabaret also supports our Music Education Fund, which has been part of All Saints since the early 1990s. What began as a way to support choir tours now helps sustain nearly every part of our music program—chorister voice lessons, our Training Choir, guest instrumentalists, special concerts, and even supplements that help keep things running week to week.

Suggested donation is $20 (kids under 16 free), and tickets will be available after church on May 10 and 17, through the church office (call, 804-288-7811 or email Winston), or online (select “Music Education Fund” and note “Cabaret”). You can also buy tickets at the door. No donation is too small, so don’t let that keep you from coming!  (And of course, no donation is too large!)

We also need your help with the potluck—dishes, desserts, wine and more are all needed!  Sign up here!

We hope you’ll join us Join us on May 17—good food, good music, and no one leaves without smiling.

2026 Guess Scholarship

Graduating high school seniors (and current higher education students) are encouraged to apply for the Guess Scholarship for 2026.

The scholarship will be awarded by the Vestry upon recommendation of an anonymous committee. Recipients will be chosen based on need and ability. Preference is shown to graduating high school seniors seeking higher education opportunities who are members (in good standing) of All Saints Episcopal Church. Current students enrolled in a trade school, apprenticeship program, associate’s degree program, or undergraduate program can also apply. If, in Vestry’s opinion, there is not an eligible applicant for the scholarship in a particular year, the Vestry may decline to award it. The award for 2026 is $900 - $1,800.00 per recipient. The deadline to apply is May 25.

Volunteers Needed at Welborne

Welborne United Methodist Church (920 Maybeury Drive) is looking for more All Saints volunteers to help with their monthly food distribution on the first Monday of each month. Volunteers serve from 4:30–6:30 p.m., delivering groceries to patrons in their cars. This is a great opportunity for teens to earn volunteer hours. Middle schoolers should attend with a parent, while high schoolers may serve independently (though it’s a great parent/teen activity!). Signup here.

Please email Karen Sundlun if you can’t come at the last minute or if you have any questions.

Choir Cabaret: May 17 at 5:00pm

Join All Saints Choirs for a festive evening of food, music, and community in support of the All Saints Music Education Fund on May 17 at 5:00 PM. We will have a potluck dinner followed by a light‑hearted concert featuring choir members and soloists. Suggested donation of $20/person, with children up to age 16 free. Tickets are on sale now through the church office, before and after the 10:30 AM service in the Cloister, and at the door. If you would like to bring food, please sign up here.

Calling All Grads!

We want to celebrate our graduating seniors (high school and college)! If your child is graduating, please email their name to Andrea Mulvaney by May 17. Our graduating college students will receive a card and our graduating high school seniors will be celebrated during our upcoming youth service on May 31 at 10:30am.

Men's Club: May 18 at 6:00pm

The next Men’s Club dinner will be held on Monday, May 18 at 6:00 p.m. in the parish hall. Join us for an evening of dinner, fellowship, and a guest speaker. Mr. Lee Mitchell, the new Executive Director of Needles Eye Ministry, will share about the ministry’s path forward. RSVP here or call the church office, 804-288-7811.

Garden Workday: May 23 at 9:00am

The Great Work begins! Everyone is invited to plant vegetables in the All Saints Garden on Saturday, May 23, beginning at 9am. No experience required. On site training (and coffee) provided. Come out to a wonderful morning of community and service. The produce grown in the garden benefits the Welborne Food Pantry. Please email David at deaconjdc@gmail.com with any questions.

Outdoor Worship Service + Potluck Lunch: May 24

Worship with us outdoors on the patio on Sunday, May 24 for our 10:30am service. Following the service, we will have a potluck picnic lunch! Please bring a dish to share, we will provide fried chicken and a vegetarian option. Bring a chair or blanket to sit on for this casual, family friendly service. We will also have some chairs setup. We will still celebrate our 8:00am service in the chapel.

Lunch Packing: Saturday, May 30

Volunteers Needed!

Saturday, May 30 at 9:00am is our next lunch packing event. We are looking for volunteers to shop (expenses reimbursed), make sandwiches, pack the lunch bags, and deliver to four area shelters. This is a great event for all ages! Email Winston with any questions. Signup here.

Upcoming Youth Events in May

In May, they will gather for a Lock-In at the church (May 8–9), help with Choir Cabaret (May 17), and enjoy a hike at Belle Isle (May 24). The Youth wrap up the month by leading worship on Youth Sunday, May 31 at the 10:30am service followed by a trip to Busch Gardens. We hope you’ll join us for these great opportunities for fellowship, fun, and service!

Contact Nick Brata with questions or to be added to the youth email list.

Ladies Who Lunch: Save the Date

The Women of All Saints will gather for Lunch at Grapevine Restaurant on Wednesday, June 3 at 11:30am. Grapevine will provide an "all-in menu" for the group - entree, non-alcoholic drink, roll, and gratuity for $20. Please save the date and look out for the official RSVP request soon!

Calling all VBS Volunteers

We are thrilled to have so many volunteers this summer for VBS. We need more teen helpers! Assisting an adult as you shepherd children through all the stations, help with science, recreation, missions, playground, or art, you are needed!

We need one more adult shepherd for Wednesday-Friday of the week.

Please contact Joan Dalrymple. Thanks!

Signup for VBS!

Children’s and Family Ministries invites children ages 3 through rising 6th grade to our Snowball Mountain Challenge, June 22nd–26th, from 9:00 am–12:00 pm. Kids will enjoy games, stories, and hands-on activities while learning to trust God and grow in faith through our theme verse, “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13). Registration is $45 per child.

Rising 5th and 6th graders are invited to join the week and participate in a mission-based program - students become scientists for the Kids Clean Water Project as they discover the global water crisis, how it affects kids just like them, and how they can help those kids receive clean water and hear The Gospel!
