A Reflection from Parishioner, Amy Burgoyne

Where are you going on vacation next year? I know it’s probably hard to think about planning a vacation when we’re just upon the cusp of the “let’s circle back after the holidays” season but start to imagine!

What is a memory of a simple vacation that your family took? For the Burgoynes, it might be the memory of escaping the mid-summer heat and taking the kids to explore the wonders of Luray Caverns. I remember the quirky little hot dog stand where we stopped for lunch. Or the time we hiked up Humpback Rocks when the mid-COVID lock downs were lifting that summer of 2020.

What is a memory of a fabulous vacation that your family took? For the Burgoynes, this one would be hard to pick but would definitely be one of our national park adventures. My personal favorite would be the trip to the Grand Tetons/Yellowstone followed by a drive across Wyoming and seeing Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park. We were awestruck by the beauty of God’s creations. The wonder and thrill of seeing those sites for the first time remains with me today.

I love to plan vacations, and our kids want to know what’s going to be next. It might be something simple like a trip to check in on my dad and stepmother in Virginia Beach, or it might be something more elaborate: maybe another national park in our future? When contemplating our next adventure, it all depends on the budget!

Once the budget is known, then the possibilities begin to emerge. There’s a budget for transportation: plane or car? There’s a budget for lodging? Airbnb, Hampton Inn or a fancy Hilton? There’s a budget for food: burgers on the road? fine dining? regional cuisine? So much research is to be done on Yelp! There’s a budget for entertainment: a kayak tour, snorkel gear rental, park entry fees? And of course, a souvenir Christmas tree ornament to remember our travels.

These vacations – both the simple ones and the more elaborate ones have forged important memories that have bonded our family together. Bill likes to play family vacation trivia. What was the name of that waiter in that unusual restaurant in St. Martin? (answer: Cedric). What were the names of the horses we rode in Yellowstone? (answer: Nacho, Cisco, Spud and Cotton).

Just like our vacation budget, All Saints’ journey to do God’s work depends on the Annual budget. With a known budget, our mission and the possibilities become clearer. And like our family memories, indelibly imprinted on our hearts, our experiences of the journey that we will go on together with All Saints will impact our hearts and our minds. You might be someone who contributes to our missions but doing so through an Annual Stewardship Pledge makes the budget KNOWN. Having this knowledge as we embark on the new year allows us to plan a fabulous journey to fulfill God’s work. We encourage our family of parishioners to be a pledging family. Together, we’ll have an incredible journey with All Saints and make some amazing memories!

Reception and Purse for Judy Kronimus

November 16

As you may know, our beloved nursery director of twenty plus years has retired. We are planning to honor her on November 16 after the 10:30am service. We will be collecting a purse for her to thank her for her many years of service to All Saints. If you would like to donate to this, you can either send a check to the office (memo: "Judy K purse") or donate online (select "purse for Judy Kronimus" as the fund).

If you would like to help with the reception or bring a treat to share, please signup here. Email Joan Dalrymple, jrdcpd@gmail.com with any questions.

The next men's club dinner will be Monday, November 17 at 6pm in the Parish Hall. Following dinner, they will hear from speaker, Dr. Kerr. Dr. Glenn Kerr is an orthopedic surgeon at OrthVirginia specializing in robotic hip and knee replacement. He spent 27 years in the U.S. Army before coming to Richmond. Dr. Kerr is married to Dr. Julie Kerr, who is an ear nose and throat surgeon. They have three children. Glen is an avid runner and mountain biker. His topic at the men’s club will be Advances in joint replacement.

STEP Toy Drive Donations

STEP is a local non profit that collects new toys for their Christmas Store. The Christmas Store offers parents in Gilpin Court the dignity of purchasing gifts for their children at an affordable price. Please bring your unwrapped gifts (include the price on a sticky note) to the All Saints Parlor (by the church office) by Sunday, November 30. Suggested items: sports equipment, arts and crafts, African American dolls, board games, toy cars & trucks, headphones, and fast food gift cards.

They are also looking for volunteers to help with the store. Details and signup are here.

Thanksgiving Boxes

We are partnering with Henrico County Social Services again this year to help provide Thanksgiving boxes to families in need. Our goal is to collect at least 20 boxes. If you can put together a box for a family, please signup here. Boxes are due to All Saints by November 21.

Full details are on the signup genius. You can also get a flyer off the outreach bulletin board outside of Thornton Hall. We also need two drivers to deliver the boxes on November 22.

Angel Tree

Help brighten a child’s Christmas by adopting an angel from our tree! This year we’re supporting 20 children in need. Starting this Sunday, you can pick an ornament from the Christmas tree by the main entrance (near the elevators), use the child’s list to shop, and return all gifts to the parlor in the office by Sunday, December 7. We currently have 10 of the 20 lists available and will add the rest as soon as they arrive. Thank you for helping share the joy of Christmas! Questions? Email Winston.

Racial Justice & Healing Workshop: November 22

The Diocese of Virginia’s Ministry for Racial Justice and Healing invites you to register for "I Will With God's Help: Equipping God's People for the Work of Racial Justice" on Saturday, November 22, from 9:00am to 2:30pm at All Saints. This workshop, grounded in the Eucharist, examines our racial history and our own understandings of that history. The workshop will provide space for worship, reflection, prayer, conversation, and community. Lunch provided. Please email The Rev. David Curtis at deaconjdc@gmail.com with any questions and/or to register.

Advent Event: November 23

Join us on Sunday, November 23rd, following the 10:30am service in Thornton Hall, as we welcome the Advent season together. Children are invited to wear their Christmas pajamas to church! Enjoy a morning filled with fun crafts, sweet treats, and fellowship for all ages as we prepare our hearts for Christmas.

Lunch Packing Event: Saturday, November 29 at 9am

Advent Evensong: December 7 at 5:00pm

Join us for a special Advent Evensong on Sunday, December 7 at 5:00 PM, featuring the Book of Common Prayer’s Service of the Light, a beautiful tradition as we anticipate the coming of Christ, the Light of the world.
