Digital dermatitis (DD) is on the way to becoming the number one cause of lameness in U.S. feedlot cattle and a BIG problem for feedlot producers. The common name for DD is hairy heel wart. Digital refers to the claw and dermatitis means inflammation of the skin. Cost-Effective Management of Stocker Cattle
Optimizing cattle performance and maintaining pasture health are important considerations when striving to maximize profitability and sustainability on a Flint Hills pasture yearling grazing operation. In order to achieve each calf’s potential for maximum gain, producers should employ every feasible management strategy available. Even though prices are elevated in many facets of beef cattle production today, there are cost-cutting measures that can be employed by stocker operators that have minimal performance impacts on calves, while maintaining a respectable margin for returns and risk.

Bloat is a form of indigestion marked by an abnormal distention of the rumen caused by accumulated gas. Gases produced in the normal rumen fermentation process are normally eructated or “belched up.” When bloating occurs, these gases cannot escape. They continue to build up and cause severe distention of the abdomen, compression of the heart and lungs, and eventually death. Feedlot bloat occurs infrequently and death losses are minimal in well-managed feedlots.
