US Squash presented Dan Keating the W. Stewart Brauns, Jr. Award—one of the organization’s highest honors—in a ceremony during the 2021 U.S. Open Squash Championships presented by Truist. The W. Stewart Brauns, Jr. Award is given by the US Squash board to a person who has made major administrative, off-the-court contributions to the game of squash.

Daniel J. Keating, III is the executive vice president of Gilbane Building Co. He has been involved in many significant projects, including the Philadelphia Convention Center, a portion of Philadelphia International Airport and played a central role in developing the Arlen Specter US Squash Center. He has made a direct impact on the sport by being involved in the construction of more than 50 squash courts nationwide.

“US Squash had never done anything like it before and halfway through we didn’t know how we were going forward," said Ned Edwards, Specter Center Executive Director. "We met with Dan and he said ‘let me have a look at this.’ He worked with us backwards from the completion date… we had the most trusted confidant to create the Arlen Specter US Squash Center that we could dream of in Dan Keating.”

"I’m very proud of what we did," Keating said. "This building reflects the personality of many people who live the sport, play the sport and enjoy the sport. But in particular Ned Edwards; he was unrelenting in his desire to make the place perfect and that’s the way it is. It’s such a great application of science, fun and sport. It’s hard to explain to anybody who hasn’t played the game, just how much fun it is and the pleasure you get out of being on that court, hitting that ball and being challenged by the people you’re playing against, and then shaking hands at the end of it and creating friendships that last for a lifetime." 
The 2021 U.S. National Squash Championships—rescheduled from its traditional spring staging—takes place this weekend at the Arlen Specter US Squash Center in Philadelphia. The updated protocols—which took effect October 15—maintain the recommendation that masks be worn at all levels of play regardless of vaccination status, and the requirement for full vaccination for participation in all accredited tournaments (for those eligible to be vaccinated). Testing requirements have been adjusted for certain levels of tournaments as have masking requirements for spectators.
The 2021 Squash Doubles Week will take place November 15-20 to celebrate and promote doubles in North America. Individuals, clubs, and programs are encouraged to host an event in their area to get players of all ages abilities on court. The campaign is focused on re-engaging doubles players in squash activities following the challenges posed to getting on court over the past year and a half. One of the great tournaments on the national squash scene featuring top collegiate players turns fifty next week. The Price-Bullington Invitational will be held on 29-31 October 2021 at the Country Club of Virginia in Richmond. In 1970 Ted Price, Salty Hawkins and other Virginian squash players founded the A. Holt Bullington Invitational, named after a beloved junior squash player who had died in 1969. The 2021 edition features top players from Cornell, Drexel, Harvard, Penn, Virginia and more.

Views From the Arlen Specter US Squash Center
The first wave of students from the Science Leadership Academy Middle School (SLAM) is currently in the middle of a several-week mini-course to introduce new students to the sport. Additional mini-courses will be offered in the coming weeks to allow all interested students the opportunity to participate. SLAM is one of several schools that will form the first school district-supported urban public school league in the country, playing out of the Arlen Specter US Squash Center this fall and winter.
