VR Innovation Academy – Now Recruiting
|
|
The Virtual Reality Innovation Academy (VRIA) - a collaboration between UNMC iEXCEL and EON Reality - welcomes the second cohort on January 13, 2020, which will be housed in the Davis Global Center.
VRIA provides the foundation for developing 3D and augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR) content including coding, animation and project management.
Students will learn from AR/VR professionals and develop a portfolio that can be used to showcase their work.
With openings for up to 20 students, eligible candidates will be highly-motivated with an aptitude for developing creative digital content. A degree in computer science, gaming, visual arts or similar is ideal, but not required.
Prospective applicants are invited to attend an open house to learn more about VRIA and how the AR/VR course will help build experience in this growing field.
RSVP Now
for the upcoming Open House on December 4 in the iEXCEL Visualization Hub.
For more information or to apply,

Heartland Interprofessional Education Conference Recap
Dr. Devin Nickol, associate dean for UNMC interprofessional education, and other members of IPE, organized and hosted t
he 2019 Heartland Interprofessional Education Conference on August 1-2, and provided an opportunity for learners, scholars and practitioners in the field of interprofessional education and healthcare to share knowledge, build skills and form relationships.
Abstracts represented original work in the areas of interprofessional practice, education and research. Dr. Pamela Boyers gave an introductory presentation about the Davis Global Center and highlighted how iEXCEL plans to support IPE activities between the health science colleges on campus and statewide. Hands-on simulation demos were provided for attendees to further explore the potential for interprofessional experiential training collaborations between IPE and iEXCEL.

Announcing the iEXCEL Student Society
As completion of the Davis Global Center approaches, UNMC students are eager to get involved with iEXCEL and help shape its development through their ideas and input. In this effort, we are excited to announce the formation of the iEXCEL Student Society.
Working towards a common goal of interprofessional communication and collaboration, the iEXCEL Student Society teamed up with the IPE Student Interprofessional Society to host an interactive information booth at the UNMC New Student Organization Fair on August 21.
The newly formed iEXCEL Student Society also plans to host focus groups in the coming months for students from all UNMC colleges. These focus groups will help the iEXCEL content creation team evaluate existing learning modules for iteration and improvement.
If you are interested in learning more about the iEXCEL Student Society, please contact Alex Erlandson, events and tour coordinator for iEXCEL at (402) 559-2446 or

iWall Connects UNMC College of Nursing
The recent installation of an interactive digital iWall at the UNMC College of Nursing Northern Division in Norfolk now allows student learning and engagement across the state. The technology helps students and faculty share content in real time, transforming collaboration and communication between learners in all UNMC College of Nursing locations (Omaha, Scottsbluff, Kearney, Lincoln and Norfolk). iEXCEL assisted in the iWall integration and training of Norfolk faculty on the technology, sharing how to most effectively use it as a teaching tool.
"The iWall is a game-changer for us in the Northern Division and for UNMC as a whole,"
said Liane Connelly, PhD, assistant dean and associate professor, College of Nursing Northern Division.
"The iWall provides an outstanding high-tech learning environment that engages students in a highly interactive fashion. Learning with the use of the iWall enables students to not only interact with each other in the face-to-face classroom, it also creates the learning community across the state via the connected interface that is a part of the iWall."

Surgical & Interventional
Simulation Showcase
On July 11-12, iEXCEL hosted a Surgical & Interventional Simulation Showcase highlighting the latest in simulation technology from industry leading companies.
Over 140 clinicians, faculty and students from UNMC and Nebraska Medicine participated in hands-on demonstrations to assist iEXCEL in evaluating the technology considered for the Davis Global Center. Attendees provided important feedback related to the adoption of particular simulation models evaluated for teaching and learning purposes.
Results of the showcase were calculated and are now available at the link below.

Emergency Medicine Outdoor Simulation
|
|
|
On August 22, the UNMC Department of Emergency Medicine took part in an immersive, interprofessional outdoor simulation. Medical students, emergency medicine resident physicians, emergency department nurses and pharmacists, SIM-NE, Gretna Volunteer FD and LifeNet all participated in this day of training. Simulations involved typical outdoor scenarios that you might see in Nebraska, including a heat injury, pool injury and several wilderness injuries.
The team also simulated the aftermath of a tornado. Scenarios included a pinned manikin, car rollover with trapped patients, and a possible biohazard spill, as well as impalement, bumps and bruises, fractures and other injuries. Several patients required on-scene triage and others needed prioritized transport, via ambulance to either the SIM-NE truck or the LifeNet helicopter. Additionally, o
bstacle courses covering a list of skills from airway management, to venomous bites and fishing injuries, allowed nurses and residents to practice hands-on skills before completing the day with a reflective discussion and debrief.
"We do a lot of reading and studying in school and I think the ability to put hands on patients and to actually react to real time situations is beneficial,"
said Dr. Jason Langenfeld, UNMC Department of Emergency Medicine director of simulation and one of the exercise planners.
"In simulation, we do that all of the time and it gives our learners the opportunity to put things they’ve learned into practice.”
Asit Misra, MD, simulation research scientist for iEXCEL, led the development of an assessment tool (Training Satisfaction Survey), designed to measure participant confidence and reactions to the training, and to ultimately improve training events in the future.
