New Generation Acquired by Catholic Charities

A local homeless shelter serving pregnant women and mothers with young children has been acquired by one of New Hampshire’s largest social services organizations. Catholic Charities New Hampshire announced Friday it has acquired New Generation, the Greenland-based homeless shelter founded in 1987 by the late Ruthie Ford, a former CCNH board member.

New Generation is a residential program for women and children, with plans to expand the shelter’s services, namely immediate access to other CCNH-affiliated programs and “wraparound services” including emergency assistance, mental health counseling, pregnancy and parenting education and referral services. The acquisition of the Portsmouth Avenue nonprofit is CCNH’s fourth program taken over in three years. New Generation will keep its name and continue on with its services, which includes both emergency and transitional housing, as well as food and general necessities, for women experiencing homelessness, case management, a parental education program, life-skills coaching and an aftercare program for former residents.

Rolleyholers Opens in Exeter After Father's Day Accident

Breaking his jaw a week before opening certainly wasn’t the introduction to the community Rolleyholers owner Bob Weygant would have planned. However, he hasn’t let the accident break his stride. Weygant has opened the doors to his new bagel shop at 92 Portsmouth Avenue.

Weygant said the support he received from the community following his accident on Father’s Day weekend affirmed his decision to come to Exeter. Community members supported him by setting up a GoFundMe campaign, raising more than $7,000 to offset his medical costs. They have also shown support by following his recovery on social media as well as stopping in the shop to wish him well. Weygant, a native of New Jersey, said when he first moved to New Hampshire in 2008, it was nearly impossible to find a bagel that was on par with those made by New Jersey bakeries he grew up frequenting. He said the pandemic caused him to feel burnt out with his career selling architectural design software, so he harkened back to his and his late mother’s passion for baking and a piece of advice she gave him growing up.

Blue Moon Evolution Rebranded to The Moon

After hibernating for the winter during the pandemic, Blue Moon Evolution is starting to get back into rhythm this summer with some notable changes to its model, new management and even a new name.

The organic farm-to-table café’s new name is The Moon, and while customers may be dismayed to see founder and longtime owner Kath Gallant stepping away from the day-to-day operation, the new management is all in the family. Gallant’s daughters Alissa Gallant-Nicholls and Meadow Ulery are taking over the café, with Alissa running the kitchen and Meadow running the front of the house. They said The Moon now features “fast-casual” food where customers can buy prepared meals out of the deli cooler and take them to go or enjoy them at the café. Gallant-Nicholls said her motivation for creating the new model is due to her husband’s and daughter’s respective food allergies. All menu items are gluten, egg and dairy-free with vegan options available. She said everything is cooked with either olive oil or avocado oil, instead of canola oil. Customers can also purchase organic wine by the bottle, which can be packaged to-go after having a glass in the café. Meanwhile, there are still Blue Moon staples offered such as Tutu’s Noodles and sesame chicken moon pies, the sisters said, with some rotating menu options.

July Chamber Spotlight:
Hempire
Hempire is a hemp boutique originally founded in 2017 by the Mastrangelo family of North Shore, MA. As the first CBD retail shop established in The Merrimack Valley/Essex County, Hempire soon made a name for itself. While the company grew to serve four different central communities throughout MA and NH it remains a small business through and through.

The first Hempire location was established in Methuen in 2017. The two founding business partners, Kirby and Rocco Mastrangelo, were a married couple who took a leap of faith in order to serve their communities more and to live out their passions. More than anything the Mastrangelos wanted to help people and that, they did. When the first Hempire brick and mortar opened its doors they started serving their community by the masses.

2021 Community Awards ~ Main Street Award
Fire and Spice Bistro
The Main Street Award is a new award for 2021, presented to a restaurant or retailer who is a member of the Exeter Area Chamber of Commerce and is located in a downtown/neighborhood business district setting in one of the 10 communities the Chamber covers.

A full service New American Bistro, Fire & Spice opened their doors in July 2020 amidst a global pandemic. Determined to live out their dream of owning a restaurant, Fire & Spice persevered. They used social media to attract customers, hired passionate staff, changed their menus to reflect the changing seasons, and became a Recovery Friendly Workplace. They changed the way they served their customers by offering outdoor dining and takeout, following the public health and safety guidelines to keep customers, staff and the community safe. And if that wasn’t enough, Kevin and Melani are deeply involved in the community, starting the Newmarket chapter of End 68 Hours of Hunger back in 2015 and continue to run it to this day.
