Central banks bought more gold in 2018 than at any time since the early 1970s – and the trend has continued this year. Isabelle Strauss-Kahn, Member of the Advisory Board of the World Gold Council, former Director of Market Operations at the Banque de France and former Lead Financial Officer at the World Bank, explains why.

Isabelle Strauss-Kahn  Former Lead Financial Officer The World Bank

In the 1990s, gold was an unloved asset among central banks. Reserve managers lent or sold their gold, particularly in Europe, and the gold price fell to a low of US$250/oz. Years of persistent selling triggered the Central Bank Gold Agreement of 1999, under which signatories agreed to limit collective sales to 400 tonnes per annum, put a cap on gold leasing and take a disciplined approach to gold futures and options.

The Agreement delivered two clear benefits: it helped to stabilise the gold price and increased transparency around central bank gold sales. Today, however, sentiment towards gold has been transformed and gold has regained its status as a valuable and highly regarded reserve asset.

Samson: Gold at unprecedented levels in years

19th July, 2019

Gold hit Friday at $ 1450 an ounce for the first time since May 2013, after comments by a senior Federal Reserve official on interest rates.

New York Federal Reserve Chairman John Williams said policymakers needed to provide incentives to deal with low inflation.

Williams' comments make it almost certain that the US Federal Reserve will choose to cut interest rates by 25 basis points at its July 30-31 meeting.

Spot gold was trading at $ 1452.60 an ounce in early trade, while gold jumped 1.2% to $ 1444.70 an ounce.

Precious metals have gained almost 2 percent since the beginning of this week and are heading towards their second consecutive weekly gain.

The precious metal also received support from new tensions in the Gulf, which increased its appeal as a safe haven. The United States said on Thursday that a US Navy ship had "destroyed" an Iranian aircraft in the Strait of Hormuz after approaching it for a threat, but Iran said it did not have Any information on this aircraft.

THE BIG CALL WITH BRUCE THURSDAY, JULY 18, 2019, INTEL ONLY
TRANSCRIBED BY PINKROSES

Bruce: Welcome Everybody to the Big Call tonight. Let’s see where we are. We were really thinking we were pretty much right there Tuesday night, and we were pretty much right there. We have come a little bit closer since Tuesday. It’s Thursday night and I am hearing some very good things.

First of all Iraq was supposed to put their new rate in Gazette. We heard that a million times. However, they have not released it. It is probably in there. It should have been on the screens at 7pm last night and we are trying to verify the new rate for the Dinar is on the screens tonight because we know that brand new currency codes were entered late this afternoon, this evening so that all of the rates could be brought up as new and all locked in. So those codes have been entered

Bruce: Obviously, as I told you on Tuesday’s call, I probably hear more after the call to verify some of this, but we are looking forward to everything being locked and loaded so to speak and ready to go.

I do not like to call it. I don’t like to sound like I am calling half the time. I am not to do that, but I will say this. We have heard from all sources that we are looking at things getting cranked up overnight tonight and into tomorrow morning. Now, here is what I say about that.
