You may recall that in July of this year, the Town's Heads Up Cornelius committee launched a drawing contest and asked young artists to help design the campaign's quarterly graphic.

We are pleased to announce that the contest's first, second, and third-place winners have been selected! Each of these talented artists did an excellent job demonstrating different aspects of roadway safety.

Mia Hoffiz's drawing was chosen to be the campaign's official graphic for the remainder of the year. In it, you can see a mother and daughter holding hands as they walk along the side of the road; they're even walking opposite the direction of traffic, which is what pedestrians should always do when a sidewalk is not available!

Mia is nine years old and a 4th grader at the North Academy of World Languages. Her school focuses on developing global awareness and cultural competence. These qualities make the school a great fit for Mia, whose mother is French and father Dominican, as she's fluent in English, French, and Spanish.

Their family, which also includes Mia's sister, Juliette, and brother, Abraham, moved to the Lake Norman area two years ago from south Florida. They love the area, especially Cornelius, for its charm and quality of life.

In her free time, Mia loves to draw, paint, read, and try fun crafts like making slime. Her favorite genres to read are fiction and history, and right now, her favorite book series is called Making Friends.

She also recently started playing volleyball after seven years of swimming! Mia said she made the switch because she wanted a drier sport to participate in.

Mia is full of big ambitions and wants to be an architect or a fashion designer when she gets older. She certainly has our support!

Avery Ritter is nine years old and a fourth grader at Cornelius Elementary! Her drawing was inspired by a close call her mom, Jana, recently had with a vehicle. She decided to draw a cyclist with a bright light attached to their bicycle because she understands just how important visibility is

She and her family moved to Cornelius from New Orleans about a year ago. She loves living in Cornelius, especially because of how close her house is to Jetton Park. Avery enjoys playing soccer and tennis and also loves riding her bike. Like a true safety enthusiast, she always reminds her mom to wear a helmet.

In school, Avery's favorite subjects are science and math. Her true passion, however, is taking care of animals, like her dog, Charlie Brown, and her hamster, Biscuit. When she gets older, Avery wants to work at an animal shelter.

Sophia Michaud is eleven years old and in sixth grade at Davidson KA! Her drawing represents the safety and security that kids feel when their parents meet them at the bus stop. She also drew a crosswalk sign since that usually indicates the safest place to cross a street.

Sophia's family moved to the Lake Norman area from New Jersey. She recently joined a local swim team and has been having a blast! In addition to her new aquatic hobby, Sophia has also been playing soccer since the age of five.

Sophia participated in our 2022 Summer Camps with her brother, Keaton. That's where they learned about the contest and also where they got to hear from Mayor Washam about why roadway safety is so important in our community.

Sophia said that since she loves to sing and swim, she'd like to make a career out of one of those talents in the future.
