Adam Lifts Himself Up With Initiative
and Self-Determination Funding
The sound of a “hip beat” greets you as you walk into the Junk Yard Training center. There, standing on a workout mat is Adam, sporting a confident look and wearing a special weight-lifter’s belt used to protect one’s back muscles. Then, Adam moves deliberately through a series of exercises using resistance bands, free weights, and machines under the careful guidance of his superb coach, Jesse Branham.
Adam is working hard to rehab an injured shoulder and rebuild strength and balance after a nasty fall while cycling near his home. Cycling was Adam’s mode of transportation and way to be independent and connected to his community. Adam has faced challenges being a person with Cerebral Palsy, but he doesn’t let that stop him from dreaming, working hard and hitting targets he aspires to.
He’s working to eventually get back onto his bike and to join buddies he has known since high school at their weightlifting gatherings. He also hopes to join the local Special Olympics weightlifting team. Coach Jesse is the perfect match for Adam’s goals as Jesse is a Special Olympics weightlifting coach, and Jesse was chosen to coach Colorado's power lifters at the USA games next June. Junk Yard exposes Adam to athletes of all abilities and the friendships that flow from that. He comes once a week and then practices his workout routines at home.
Adam says he is determined to recuperate and reach his goals. It’s this attitude that helped make it clear he was a good candidate to receive DDRC Self Determination Initiative (SDI) funding that has financed his rehab and training. The purpose of SDI funding is to help people with developmental disabilities residing in Jefferson County to achieve goals important to them to live more fulfilling lives. The funds are made possible through the Jefferson County Mill levy and the support of the Jeffco citizens. “It’s so awesome I have this, and thank you,” Adam says of that support. Julia Panucza, DDRC’s Self Determination Coordinator oversees the funding requests and follow-through on the use of funds. She says, “I admire Adam’s determination to continue his physical journey to stay active and get stronger, and all that can lead to.”
Recently at the gym, Adam lifted 300 pounds with the squat-machine and leg-pressed an amazing 580 pounds. The self-determination funds are making it possible for Adam to reach his strength, balance, mobility, and sports goals, but they are also helping Adam prove to himself that that it’s possible he can achieve other goals too!

Changes To IntelliRide
IntelliRide manages non-emergency medical and non-medical transportation for Health First Colorado members (participants in Colorado’s Medicaid Program) in the state of Colorado. If you don’t have a way to get to and from your covered health care services and appointments, you may be able to get a free ride through a service called Non-Emergent Medical Transportation (NEMT). NEMT is not for emergencies.
Intelliride provides NEMT services, however, effective August 1, IntelliRide no longer serves as the statewide broker for NEMT Services. IntelliRide has reduced their service area to their original nine-county service region, which includes Jefferson County, but does not include Clear Creek, Gilpin or Summit Counties.

Health First members who reside in Jefferson County may continue to call IntelliRide at 1-855-489-4999 or 303-398-2155 (State Relay 711) or visit gointelliride.com/colorado/ for more information.
Health First Colorado members who reside outside of Intelliride’s 9-country service area need to contact their local transportation provider directly to schedule non-emergent transportation services, including picking up subscriptions.
