Message from Bishop Kym: Palm Sunday

Greetings, beloved in Christ. This coming Sunday is Palm Sunday. Palm Sunday marks the end of our Lent and observance, and initiates the beginning of Holy Week. Holy Week is an invitation for each of us to walk with Jesus the way of the cross. Holy Week bids us, walk with Jesus and experience betrayal and arrest and trial and sentencing and, finally, execution. It bids us to see Jesus standing and proclaiming love, even to his crucifixion and death.

For many of us, it is tempting to rush to Easter, but the reality of our story is we cannot really understand and embrace the miracle of Easter without having known the trauma of Monday, Thursday, and Good Friday, we cannot fully appreciate the call to love that has been poured into us by the Spirit because of Christ’s life and witness, and His death.

Quest Retreats

Quest Retreat for High Schoolers

April 12-14, at Cathedral Ridge, Woodland Park. Everything that has and will happen to you composes the story of your life. And while we may not have control over every aspect of the plot, you do get to decide how you react and what tone it’s written in. How you tell your story is up to you. And as high schoolers, your story is about to unfold in wonderous and exciting ways! Storytelling is at the foundation of our faith. We are drawn to the stories where love triumphs over evil, where community enables us to be our best selves, and where we all belong. Quest with high schoolers from around the diocese as we connect our faith story to the timeless, magical films we love, enabling us to live more fully into our own personal stories, sharing them with others.

The disciples often found themselves on a boat at sea, weathering the storm with their fearless captain, Jesus. What can we learn from them? Join middle schoolers from around the diocese for a pirate-themed lock-in. Together, we will play games, learn how to forge true friendships, work as a team to prevent a mutiny, and discover what it means to be on the same ship in life with Jesus at the helm.

Exploring Your Vocation

Discernment is at the heart of our baptismal call. Every baptized person is called to be a minister of the Body of Christ. For some, that call is manifest in pursuing ordained ministry or a call to religious life.

As the Episcopal Church in Colorado examines what a life of discernment looks like, we are shifting from the Road to Ministry program to Exploring Your Vocation Discernment Days. There will be two planned gatherings where members of various orders, the Diaconate, the Priesthood, and the Vowed Religious Life, will lead conversations about their ministry. To assist with your discernment, please feel free to register for all 3 presentations at the location that works for you.

  • Saturday, May 4, 2024 – St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 7400 Tudor Rd., Colorado Springs, 80919
  • Saturday, June 1, 2024 – St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church, 2425 Colorado Ave., Boulder, CO 80302

Just Peace

Dr. Mary Segall, a member of the vestry of the Church of Ascension in Pueblo, has just returned from a visit to Palestine. Mary joined a delegation of 23 American Christians, pastors and lay people, activists all, some who have been to Palestine and Israel often, a few who have lived and worked in the region, and a few who are visiting for the first time. Mary lived in Ramallah, West Bank in 2008-2009 during Operation Cast Lead when Gaza was bombed for three weeks up to the inauguration of Barak Obama. Witnessing this tragedy with people and staff living in Gaza has fueled her passion for a just peace for the people living in Palestine and Israel.

Resources for the Conflict in the Holy Land

The following is an ongoing list of Episcopal Church resources relating to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. It will be updated as further information and resources become available:

Congratulations to the Rev. Amy Feins who has been called as Associate Rector of Church of the Ascension, Denver

Amy comes to Ascension from Trinity-by-the-Cove Episcopal Church in Naples, Florida where she has been an assisting priest for the past two years.

Prior to being called to ordained ministry, Amy worked for more than a decade as the Director of College Counseling at a k-12 independent school in Naples. Originally from Pasadena, California, Amy has also lived in rural New Hampshire as well as Washington, DC and Arlington, VA. She attended Nashotah House Theological Seminary in Delafield, WI. Amy and her husband Jon have four grown children and one incredibly adorable grandson, Henry, who will be relocating to Denver in the near future! An animal lover, Amy is especially excited that their new home is only a couple of miles from the zoo!

Congratulations to the Rev. Jeremy Lucas who has been called as Interim Rector of St. Paul’s, Steamboat Springs

The Rev. Jeremy Lucas has served the Episcopal and Anglican church for over 25 years and strives to embody the roles of priest, teacher, and social justice advocate by instilling values of kindness, generosity, and radical inclusion. Before becoming a priest, Jeremy practiced law, emphasizing criminal justice reform, business ethics, and violence prevention. He notably spearheaded the initiative to pass Alabama's first felony animal cruelty law. Originally from Birmingham and rooted in his Alabama upbringing, his ministry is inspired by the civil rights leaders of the South. His advocacy for social justice and community healing has led him to take strong public stands against racial discrimination and gun violence.

Jeremy attended the General Theological Seminary in New York City and has served in a variety of ministries in the Diocese of Alabama, Olympia, and Oregon. He served as the dean of the smallest cathedral in the Anglican communion in Windhoek, Namibia, in the Province of Southern Africa for several years. He lives in Portland, Oregon, and enjoys public storytelling, writing, birdwatching, and running.
