Transformation Academy Recap
Thank you for joining us for "Transformation Academy: Our Ministry on the Border," led by Troy Elder, EDSD Migration Missioner. Transformation Academy, the virtual learning and enrichment series, allows us to dive deeper into four diocesan priority areas: Peace & Justice, Evangelism, Discipleship, and Leadership. If you missed the presentation, you can find Troy's talk below.
Due to the great success of this series we wanted to offer more chances to come together and learn about a ministry that is particularly important to us in San Diego. Join us for a presentation from the talented Rev. Anne Cox Bailey on October 21 at 6:00 pm.
The Rev. Anne Cox Bailey is the founder of Ponder Anew, created to serve people living with dementia, their loved ones, and care partners. Her work focuses on teaching people how to create compassionate, person-centered relationships that honor everyone involved. She is especially interested in encouraging churches to become centers of information and assistance in their communities.
Migration Missive: Missions, Fields & Borders
By: Troy Elder, Migration Missioner
Orthodoxy and history suggest that Protestant mission involves a Christian protagonist crossing an international boundary into something called the “mission field,” in order to evangelize, serve, or both.   But what does it mean for our discipleship when the sending is reversed, and the mission work comes to us?   And when it does so from a variety of sources, and seemingly all at once?

When I began to write this a month ago, I thought I had a respectable handle on the first question. The refugee “flows” from Central America at our southern border had, for a number of years, assumed a certain regularity.   Working in the national immigration “field,” and physically in places like Tijuana and Mexicali but also in destination cities across the United States, I’d probably somewhat internalized a paradigm shift: through imperfect attempts to embody Christ’s love by advocating for and serving newcomers, I had become the evangelized. Commission on Ministry: Day of Information
Saturday October 9th via Zoom, 10 AM – Noon
The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors, and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ. (Eph. 4:11-13 NRSV)

Are you feeling the draw of the Holy Spirit? Are you gifted and want to bless others? Perhaps to teach, preach, or lead worship? We are here for you, one need not be ordained to do so, and we can help prepare you for your call. Considering ordination anyway? We are here for you too. The Commission on Ministry invites anyone discerning any call to ministry—lay or ordained—to explore the possibilities with us. We will overview the various lay licensing opportunities that are available and the ordination process. We will answer your questions and get to know you, regardless of where you are on your personal journey as a disciple. Bishop Susan, cochairs Meredith Hardy and Rev. Richard Hogue, along with the other members of the Commission on Ministry want to discern with you. We are so excited to dive deeper and explore each other’s gifts! Register here to join us for this discernment opportunity.
Diocesan Convention Changed to Virtual Meeting
Diocesan Convention 2021 will be held virtually November 5-6. The virtual environment allows EDSD to provide live workshops and presentations from across the Episcopal Church. With expanded offerings, new workshops, and guest speakers, you can enjoy a safe, educational, and energizing convention from the comfort of home--or as a delegation at church.

While we were all looking forward to an in-person convention this year, the continued uncertainty around the prevalence of COVID variants, partial vaccinations, and concern for public health, the decision was made to host Convention virtually. This change reduced the cost of Convention. EDSD will issue a partial refund to those who have already registered.

Registered delegates will be provided with a zoom link and voting code via email the week of Convention. Visitors can enjoy the live broadcast through the Diocesan YouTube channel.
Visit www.conventionedsd.org for regular updates and registration information.

Diocesan Vaccination Policies for Staff and Events
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego has been committed to loving God and our neighbors through public health policies that help ensure healthy practices within our diocese. Now that the Pfizer vaccination has been fully approved by the FDA, EDSD’s Executive Council met on Saturday, August 28, 2021, and approved a new COVID-19 policy. This policy applies to employees of the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego, and to diocesan events such as Clergy Conference, Diocesan Convention, and Ordinations until further notice. The diocese is not issuing directives for employees of congregations or for congregational events, but we recommend these policies for your Vestry or Bishop’s Committee to consider adopting or adapting for your congregation. These policies do not apply to events that are organized and managed by outside (though affiliated) groups, such as Cursillo, Episcopal Community Services, or RefugeeNet. Diocesan Staff Changes
Today we are announcing two changes in staffing at the diocese. Christian Gillette, who served as the Canon for Evangelism and Discipleship, is no longer serving in that role. We are grateful for Christian’s service and pray for all the best for him in his future endeavors.

Canon Jason Evans has begun work as Canon for Mission, an expansion of the role that was previously announced for him. In addition to overseeing church planting and redevelopment, and diocesan stewardship and development, Canon Jason will oversee the mission areas of evangelism, discipleship, and church growth, as well as our missioners for peace and justice. He has extensive experience in mission oversight from his previous positions in the Dioceses of Texas and Washington. We are very glad to have Canon Jason on board and expect that he will soon be contacting leaders of congregations to get to know you. You can reach him at [email protected]

Creation Care Offerings

Church Security and Emergency Planning
Acts of targeted violence against houses of worship are a real—and potentially growing—problem in the United States. Keeping our churches and neighborhoods safe is a key focus of The Episcopal Church, our diocese, and the Department of Homeland Security. The Episcopal Diocese of San Diego offers free, comprehensive security and emergency plan tools and templates for your use. Please contact Jeff Green for more information about church security or emergency planning.

The Episcopal Church Office of Government Relations recently shared these resources:

Beware of Phishing Attempts
If you receive a suspicious email from an address that seems to be Bishop Susan, but it is not from an @edsd.org email account, it is a phishing attempt. Bishop Susan will never email you asking for funds or financial support by way of gift cards. Nor will the bishop's emails be filled with grammatical errors. Every official email from the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego comes from an @edsd.org email address.
Phishing is a cyber attack that uses disguised email as a weapon. The goal is to trick the email recipient into believing that the message is something they want or need — a request from their bank, for instance, or a note from someone in their company — and to click a link or download an attachment.
St. Luke's and RefugeeNet Seek Development Associate
St. Luke's and RefugeeNet are partnering to share a full-time Development Associate who will manage our annual fundraising efforts. Click here for the position description and please apply by sending a cover letter and resume to the Rev. Colin Mathewson at [email protected] by September 18.
