Diocesan Update

Standing Committee Meeting Highlights

The Standing Committee is committed to timely transparency whenever possible. Unfortunately, this issue of the Standing Committee Highlights missed the deadline for the last weekly update e-mail. (Blame it on the Rona!) Keep in mind that these Highlights are not the official minutes of Standing Committee meetings, but are designed to call attention to important information and developments of interest to the Diocese of Albany. Please continue asking God to bless and guide the Standing Committee. “Always rejoice; constantly pray; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (I Thessalonians 5:10).

The Profile and Search Committee for the election of the Tenth Bishop of Albany has released our Diocesan Profile (PDF)   and call for recommendations for nominees (FORM). Please enjoy reading and learning about our diocese and if you are so led, send a recommendation for someone you believe would be qualified to serve as our next bishop.

Thank you for your support and prayers over the past year and going forward to the election of the one God is calling.

In the service of our Lord and Savior,

Sue Ellen Ruetsch, Chair, Profile and Search Committee

Encountering God’s Actions in a Broken World

Diocese of Albany Priests’ Retreat Nov 1-4, 2022

Registration deadline approaching

Join both Bishop Michael Smith and Bishop Carol Gallagher for the annual Priests' Retreat of the Diocese of Albany.  Together we will enjoy a special and holy time of rest, spiritual nourishment, worship, prayer, and fellowship.

Our speaker, The Reverend Dr. Robert D. Flanagan will help us ponder: What if joy and hope can be encountered in a world full of trouble? By broadening and deepening our ability to behold God’s actions in the world, we can discover joy and hope within and around us. Our ability to discern the Spirit’s workings in our ministries, parishes, and lives is essential to our vocational fulfillment. During our conversations, we will explore biblical accounts that will help you engage or reengage with the Spirit, feeding your body, mind, and soul.

The Reverend Dr. Robert D. Flanagan is Chaplain at General Theological Seminary and Senior Associate Priest at Christ’s Church Rye, New York. He has been a priest for nearly twenty years, serving in a variety of positions, and holds an M.Div. and D.Min. in Christian Spirituality from Virginia Theological Seminary. He and his wife live in Litchfield County, Connecticut.

We invite you to come and enjoy the beautiful facility and gracious hospitality found at Christ the King Center in Greenwich, NY. Overnight and commuter options are available. We also offer scholarships

What Brings You Joy in Your Ministry as Deacon

The annual Deacons’ Retreat is scheduled for January 20-22, 2023, at Christ the King Center.

Bishop Michael Smith, Assisting Bishop in the Diocese of Albany and the Diocese of Dallas, will be our retreat leader. The retreat theme will be exploring what brings you joy in your ministry as a deacon. During a recent meeting of the Deacon’s Council, we discussed Frederick Buechner’s quote: “The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.” Bp. Smith will use this quote to help frame our retreat conversations. We look forward to gathering for worship with abundant quiet and reflection time.
