The 81st General Convention of The Episcopal Church concluded last weekend after ten days of discernment, worship, and legislation. The Diocese of Indianapolis showed up in many wonderful ways to do the work of the Church. From our official deputation, steadfast and generous volunteers, and staff members supporting the work of the convention to the Episcopal Women's Ministry Triennial and our Diocesan Youth who took center stage at the public witness against gun violence--Indy Dio met the moment with full and prayerful participation.
Most notably, the Rt. Rev. Sean Rowe was elected the 28th presiding bishop on June 26 by the House of Bishops and confirmed by the House of Deputies. Our own Bishop Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows was elected by the House of Bishops to serve as their Vice President. Both terms will begin on Nov. 1, and we look forward to this expanded role for Bishop Jennifer! Julia Ayala Harris, a deputy from the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma, was reelected on June 25 as president of the House of Deputies, and the Rev. Steve Pankey was elected as vice president. Their terms are effective immediately.
GC81 also saw the final realization of two successful diocesan unifications and welcomed the new dioceses of Wisconsin and the Great Lakes. Hundreds of legislative actions were taken, including provisions to make the CPG health plan more affordable and equitable, welcoming the Church in Navajoland as a missionary diocese, strengthening non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ+ clergy, and creating a Creation Care loan fund for local congregations.... to name a few!
