Civil rights activist Ruby Sales visits St. Matthew's

Ruby Sales led a public lecture at St. Matthew's on March 26. Sales is a s ocial-justice activist and veteran of the civil rights struggle. She nearly died in August 1965, when a white supremacist fired a shotgun at her.

She was a 16-year-old college student, standing on a store porch in rural Hayneville, Alabama, and she was spared when 26-year-old Episcopal seminarian Jonathan Myrick Daniels pushed her aside. He died in her place. The gunman was acquitted by an all-white jury.  Sales has since devoted her life to the struggle for racial justice. Read more about Sales and her mission here. Listen to Sales' "On Being" interview with  Krista Tippet here.
