New from Church House
The Bishop of Huddersfield, the Rt Revd Jonathan Gibbs, has been named as the new Bishop of Rochester, Downing Street announced this morning. Bishop Jonathan will head the Church of England’s second oldest diocese after Canterbury, and said how much he valued being part of the team that forged our young diocese.
“It has been a huge privilege to serve as the first Bishop of Huddersfield over the last seven and a half years and to be part of the adventure of shaping the new Diocese of Leeds.
“Also, it has been a great pleasure working with Bishop Nick and my colleagues in his staff team, as well as with Archdeacon Anne Dawtry, and now Archdeacon Bill Braviner.
“We have been blessed with a great Area Staff Team and many fantastic clergy and lay leaders who work so hard to help our churches thrive and make a difference in our communities.”
Resources for parishes responding to the Ukraine crisis
The war in Ukraine has triggered the largest war-related migration of people since the Balkan War of the 1990s. This page contains information for parishes and individuals seeking to respond, from both the Diocese of Leeds and Church of England.

A recent webinar was held sharing these resources, which can been seen here.

Wellsprings Together are inviting churches that are now involved or plan to be involved in taking in Ukrainian refugees to a webinar to share learning and receive support. Taking place on Wednesday, April 20, at 7.30pm-8.30pm, it will be an informal time together with the chance to ask questions, learn from one another and hear examples of best practice along with signposting to support available in your area. Find out more here.
Church Revitalisation: Three Conversations
Looking forward, there are three conversations to flag up:
Please move quickly to book onto Unrolling the Scroll - a day long conversation about mission and ministry in post-industrial contexts. If you serve inner urban, outer estate, former mining, or changing rural communities, then this is for you, and takes place on Thursday, April 7 at Wakefield Cathedral, 10.30-3.30pm. Email [email protected] to book.

With a bit more notice: Thursday, May 5 at 7.30pm online. If you are running a Messy Church, thinking of starting one or trying to re-start a Messy Church in the aftermath of COVID restrictions, you are welcome to join Revd Jude Smith, Director of Church Revitalisation, Liz Morton, Children Young People and Families Team leader, Karin Shaw, Fresh Expressions Enabler and others for a conversation about challenges and joys, next steps and support.
To reserve a place please contact [email protected]. You will then be sent the Zoom link a day or so before the conversation.

And as we emerge from COVID, consider bringing some folks along to Leading Your Evangelism into Growth on Monday, June 20 to Wednesday, June 22. This is for churches in all sorts of settings who are hearing God’s invitation to move on in evangelism. More details can be found here, or drop Robin a line on [email protected] to talk about discounts in the diocese.

Revd Jude Smith, Director of Church Revitalisation
Church Buildings and Pastoral Reorganisation Team: the Queen’s Green Canopy made easier
Your parish may wish to plant a tree in the churchyard to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy. Trees can be planted in a churchyard with authorisation from the Archdeacons, using the Online Faculty System List B. If you wish to add a plaque, this normally requires a faculty, but for this celebration the Chancellor has given the Archdeacons the authority to allow a plaque to mark that the tree was planted for the Jubilee, and this can be added to the List B request.
Bishop Nick honoured for championing communication
Bishop Nick has been awarded the Chartered Institute of Linguists’ David Crystal Trophy for his work in championing the power of language. The award is given to individuals who have made “an outstanding contribution to the field of languages throughout their life and career. They may not be a linguist themselves, but languages will have been a constant within their work and life and they will have used their knowledge to help or inspire others”. Read more here.
Prayer and Spirituality Team: Thy Kingdom Come
Thy Kingdom Come is a global prayer movement that invites Christians around the world to pray for more people to come to know Jesus. It began in 2016 as an invitation from the Archbishops of Canterbury and York to the Church of England and has grown into an international and ecumenical call to prayer. During the 11 days of Thy Kingdom Come, it is hoped that everyone who takes part will:

  • Deepen their own relationship with Jesus Christ
  • Pray for five friends or family to come to faith in Jesus
  • Pray for the empowerment of the Spirit that we would be effective in our witness

More on Thy Kingdom Come can be found here.

Stewardship and Income Generation Team: New Generous Giving Film
"Money and cash is a pretty sensitive subject for most of us, but it’s because we do so much for so many that we need a bit more generous giving."
That’s the message in a new film produced for the Stewardship and Income Generation Team by the Bishop’s Adviser for Church Growth, Robin Gamble. St Richard’s Church in Seacroft features with its congregation committed to service of the community and who are embarking on a journey of renewal and resurrection. The film will be shown at the upcoming Diocesan Giving Days and you are also able to view it here.
Stewardship and Income Generation Team: Giving Days
Generosity is at the heart of our faith. We believe in a generous God and our own generosity is a testament and hallmark of our faith in action. Every day we see generosity in our churches and Christian communities, reflecting the generous God we believe in. However, we often struggle to know how to harness this generosity and grow our generous church culture. Changes in the ways to give to church can confuse us and resources to support discipleship have been hard to find, until now…
Join the Diocesan Stewardship and Income Generation Team at one of their Giving Days.

The day is a chance to:

  • discuss the challenges around giving and explore some of the superb resources developed by the National Giving Team
  • understand how to communicate impact and need to the church community and beyond
  • hear about digital and online giving developments in the church and news of free contactless machines
  • find grant funders waiting to support your church projects

Attendees will gain a new and exciting understanding of how to engage givers in their church and ways of giving beyond the offertory plate.
More information for the Diocesan Giving Days can be viewed here.
If you have any questions please contact Lead Stewardship Officer Becky Nicholson on [email protected]

Children, Young People and Families Team: Events
This month we’d like to highlight some sessions to support parishes as they look to start/re-start/review their connections with children, young people and families.
To begin with, we have An Introduction to the Children, Young People and Families Mission Toolkit on Wednesday, April 6, which introduces resources to support parishes in their mission and ministry with children, young people and families. Linked to this we have Engaging with Families through Seasonal Events on Tuesday, May 3 which is a workshop exploring how parishes might plan events using the Seasons of the Church Year to help engage with families in our communities.

We are also excited to highlight three new opportunities…
Firstly, a chance to think through how to keep connected with children and families as they leave Toddler Group for school with Toddler Group Transitions on Tuesday, April 26
Secondly, an invitation to anyone involved in running a Messy Church, thinking of starting one or trying to re-start a Messy Church in the aftermath of COVID restrictions to a Messy Church Conversation on Thursday, May 5
And thirdly, we have Starting Up Youth Work on Wednesday, May 11, which offers a starting or gathering point for people exploring new youth work in their parish to come and share and be inspired with stories, encouragement and planning.
