From the Desk of the Diocesan Secretary
Dear all,

I never know whether September is relief, because of the order and structure it brings, or annoying, because it signals we are back to routine and all the things I have put off over the last few weeks now need doing. Wherever you are on that spectrum, I hope the information below is helpful in providing some guidance as to things that are coming up and support that is available. This edition of Enews+ comes at a time when minds will also be in the clergy conference and so feel free to come back to it after that, when minds may be clearer.

There are a few things I specifically wanted to mention. Firstly, we will be coming out at some point in September with details on how you can seek support for increased costs in relation to energy and other items – we are keen to provide as much support as possible to ease what is we know going to be a difficult time for many. Please do look out for that and please get in touch before then if you are suffering particular hardship. Secondly, we know there is a lot of concern about energy prices in relation to our churches. We are looking hard internally at what we might be able to do in this space, although as you will know this is an issue affecting us globally and there are no easy answers. We will try and provide some more guidance on energy options soon, not least in relation to our Green Journey scheme.

There is lots more below, so please do take your time to digest and come back when needed. Enjoy the clergy conference and do say hi to those of us from Church House who are around and about!

Launching Saving Creation Ministry Training pathway

This envisages three categories of engagement: Eco Discipleship for All (Saving Creation Bronze); Parish Environment Officer (Saving Creation Silver); and the pilot role of Eco Missioner (Saving Creation Gold). Training may be undertaken without it necessarily leading to one of the formal categories of engagement.

Who in your parish could benefit from this training? Saving Creation Bronze is available online now here. The Silver and Gold courses will be starting in September. Details can be found here.
Energy prices explained
As nationally energy prices are rising for churches, in this month’s Green Journey newsletter, our energy partners explain what’s driving the cost of gas and electricity upwards and offer advice on the best contracts for church finances. They also provide top tips on how churches can reduce energy use to cut financial and carbon costs. The Green Journey currently procure electricity and/or gas for 245 churches in the diocese. Read the advice here.

Generosity Week 2022 is this month!
Generosity Week 2022 kicks off across our Diocese at the end of September following its successful introduction during last Autumn.

From Sunday, September 25 to Sunday, October 2, churches and individuals are encouraged to explore God’s generosity through eight days of service and worship materials. Many more churches are planning events and activities to celebrate Generosity Week this year ranging from thank you events to taking the opportunity to launch the Parish Giving Scheme.

There are many excellent resources available that have been written by the experts in the National Giving Team to help you celebrate Generosity Week and all can be adapted for use by churches to suit different context and needs.

New resources produced for this year include the Generosity Newsletter, a Young Children’s Resource, and ideas on Engaging the Wider Community. The Diocese of Leeds have produced a guide to help Children and Young People explore Stewardship and you can also watch a recorded webinar on 'How to Run Generosity Week'.
