Following the Commonwealth Games and the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting next week, it's been announced that Leeds Minster is to host a major regional Commonwealth celebration. The service at 3.30pm on April 22 will have an international feel and all are invited - and wear national dress. More here
Nominations open on April 19 for the new three year term of Diocesan Synod and the diocese is hoping to attract younger members to serve on the decision making 'parliament' of the diocese. Wide ranging issues are discussed and debated from environmental improvements to care for refugee groups or the latest plans for church growth  More here
The Diocese's new Chief Finance Officer, Geoff Park, is busy learning about the Anglican church to best understand future challenges and opportunities.  "I come from a Methodist and Baptist background and so it's fascinating to learn all about the Church of England's structures," said Geoff, Read more here 
The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, joined Christians from across the country last week at the first Spring Harvest to be held in Harrogate.  The annual teaching and worship conference attracted many from within our diocese including the Vocations and Ministry team offering advice. More here 
Sunrise services were held across the diocese on Easter Day, even when the sun was not to be seen.  Thanks to those who have sent in pictures of their early morning services to celebrate the resurrection of Christ.  More here 
When gas supplies were cut to nearly 4000 homes in Silsden near Keighley over the Easter weekend, St James Church came to the rescue. The church hall became an emergency hub and incident room and emergency heaters and meal vouchers were handed handed out to elderly and vulnerable people without gas. More here
An online Leeds CofE Camera Club is now open for anyone to join and share photographs that celebrate the beautiful diversity of England's youngest diocese.  A new Facebook group has now been launched where all are invited to post images of the church in action More here

Diocesan Lay Conference
Bookings are now open for the Diocesan Lay Conference which will bring together more than 1600 participants.  The conference is being held on Saturday 9 June at the Harrogate Convention Centre and is designed to support church members. More details here 
Ripon Cathedral's popular Spring Food, Home and Garden Show returns on Saturday 14 April with more stalls than last year and top experts cooker and gardening experts. They include  Lee Rushforth, Head Chef at The Old Deanery Hotel, a quarter finalist on BBC MasterChef The Professionals. More here 
Sir Mark Hedley will be giving this month's Ecclesiastical Law Society lecture in Leeds on Practical Aspects of the Clergy Discipline Measure. The lecture on April 24 at 5pm is free. In addition to being a High Court judge until his retirement in 2013, Sir Mark has been Chancellor of the Diocese of Liverpool since 2002. More details here
Anglican Cursillo helps Christians grow as disciples through prayer, study & action helping them to share God's love and do His work. The next 3 day weekend for our diocese is 3-6 May at Wydale Hall. Find out more. See also the Leeds Anglican Cursillo web-page here.
Godparents' Sunday
Godparents' Sunday can be celebrated on 6 May or any time of the year. A great opportunity to invite baptism families to come along with godparents to a special service. Resources for invitations, the service and helping godparents understand their role can be found on the Church Support Hub.
Thy Kingdom Come is a ten-day Global Wave of Prayer from May 10-20 And this year, at Bradford Cathedral , there will be a Thy Kingdom Come Diocesan Celebration with contributions from across the diocese on  Sunday May 13 from 3pm - 6pm. More details here 
Couples who were married 50 years ago in 1968 are being invited to a special Golden Wedding Celebration at Ripon Cathedral on the afternoon of  Sunday June 10 at 3.30pm . It is an opportunity to renew wedding vows and celebrate together. Preacher is the Bishop of Bradford, Toby Howarth. More details here

Rebekah Hinton, from West Bowling, who set up a clothing bank to help children in her local community has received a Rotary Young Citizen Award. W hen she was 16 she bagan a children's clothes bank and organised distribution through schools and charities.  Now 20, she says she is 'surprised and delighted' to have received the Rotary Young Citizen Award. Whitechapel Church, Cleckheaton is to sponsor a child's education at a Kenyan school  in Msambweni, Kenya.  Nishan Ramadhan is eight  years old and has been suggested for sponsorship by the Emley African Education Project, a small charity run by Jim and Rosemary Donnan.  More here 
Bishop of Kirkstall, Paul Slater, has unveiled a Blue Plaque to honour the life of religious, educational and social benefactor Agnes Stewart. The  memorial wall sign has been erected on the site of the former Agnes Stewart CofE High School. More with pictures here 
Diamond wedding couple Gerald and Kath Clark have just celebrated 60 years together in the parish where they married and at the Harehills church they have attended ever since. Find out more here 
It will be a grand reopening after a long period of conservation and restoration for St. John's Church, Sharow, near Ripon, at the end of this month. The church will open its doors on April 29th. For months it has been shrouded by scaffolding as conservators worked on stained glass, wall paintings and the construction of modern facilities. More here
A group of parishioners from Bolton cum Redmire parish organised a 130 mile round-trip to Leeds last week to visit Leeds Minster, and St George's Crypt. Find out how they got on here
Local marathon runner, Martin Holding, achieved his personal best marathon time of 3 hours 20 minutes in the Manchester Marathon last Sunday whilst running to support the Diocese of Leeds Mothers' Union 'Away from it All' (AFIA) holiday scheme. Diocese of Leeds  Mothers' Union members were on the line to cheer him home.. Read more here

The May 2018 edition of the Prayer Diary is now online.There are fresh prayers for Sudan as well as prayers for Tanzania and for new deacons and priests, as well as those in training. Download prayers here.
New regulations on Data Protection take effect from 25 May, 2018, replacing the existing Data Protection Act of 1998. They give individuals more rights and parishes will need to comply  just like any other charity or organisation. Parish Resources have produced a guide with work sheets for PCCs.   Find out more here.
Contactless payment is now permitted in parishes across the diocese following a nationwide launch by the Church of England.
And the Revd Robb Sutherland at Holy Nativity, Mixenden, has seized the opportunity and already has a terminal to take instant payments of fees or donations.  Find out more here 
Clergy are being challenges to have at least one conversation per month with someone about vocation. The CofE 'Great Vocations Conversation' has been launched by the Vocations division which says. ' Starting a conversation could be as simple as a chat in the queue for tea or coffee about someone's passions and gifts'. Find out more about the challenge here 
Are you thinking about making changes to your church but need some funding to develop your ideas? The National Churches Trust Project Development Grant programme is intended to help support churches at early stages of a project with grants of up to £10,000, 50% funds must be in place. The deadline is 25 April. More here
Encounter is a new Ministry Experience Scheme for those aged 18-29 years beginning in September 2018. Up to 6 participants will be able to experience ministry in one of four parishes for nine months along with theological education and time and space to discern what God's call means for you.
