Churches across the Diocese are gearing up to open their doors to visitors over two special weekends in September. The  Heritage Open Days form part of England's largest festival of history and culture and more  than 70 churches in the Diocese have officially registered to take part though many others are being encouraged to get on board. Find out which and discover more here 
A BBC2 Horizon special,  broadcast yesterday August 29, 'A Week Without Lying: The Honesty Experiment', has featured North Yorkshire parish priest, Canon Ruth Newton.   Ruth was invited to take part in an experiment to see if she could go for a week without lying. If you missed the programme find out how she got on! 
Young people from across the diocese have been reflecting on a 'momentous trip' to the United States which has deepened ties with the link diocese of Southwestern Virginia. The group  spent nearly three weeks in the episcopal diocese experiencing nothing but 'warmth', 'welcome' and 'hospitality' - read more about their experience here 
160 young people from across the Diocese and beyond gathered joyfully for this summer's Ripon Venture camps, which combined great activities with Christian engagement.   Two week-long residential courses at Ripon Grammar School for 11 to 18-year-olds included team-building exercises, such as gorge scrambling, cave exploration and group games. An evening of music and art for all the family raising funds in support of Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is promised at Bradford Cathedral this Saturday 1 September at 7pm. Music from  the City of Bradford Brass Band (Championship Section) and Knaresborough's singing train guard, Paul Mirfin together with an  art exhibition  from local schools. Details and tickets here 
The diocese will say farewell to the Ven. Beverley Mason, the Archdeacon of Richmond and Craven, at a special service in Ripon Cathedral on Sunday 2 September at 3.30pm. She will be consecrated as the Bishop of Warrington  at York Minster on October 18th - more here 
A live broadcast of Radio 4's Any Questions? - chaired by Jonathan Dimbleby and currently celebrating its 70th anniversary - is being hosted at Leeds Minster on Friday 7 September 2018. Free tickets are required. More details on how to get them here 
Coinciding with the first Heritage Open Days weekend (see News section above) on Saturday 8 September, Ride and Stride encourages people in your community to take part in a sponsored walk or cycle ride between local churches. The event  raises almost £1.5M for participating churches in England every year. More here  and how you can take part  
In a new venture, a series of mini-pilgrimages through the North Yorkshire countryside will be setting out from Ripon Cathedral over the summer.   The 'Wilfrid Walks' will provide space for prayer, reflection and fellowship visiting unseen spiritual places not normally open to the public. The third  walk is on Saturday 8 September More here 
A series of two part training events will be taking place around the diocese from  September 10 for church members to discover how their church impacts on the environment. Of particular interest to churchwardens, clergy and PCC members. Full details on the downloadable poster here 
Talking About The E Word at St George's, Leeds on September 13 will be evangelists, S ophie Jelley from Durham Cathedral and author and vicar, Matt Woodcock, sharing ideas and good practice. The day, initially for clergy has been opened up for anyone involved in evangelism or youth work. More information on the Learning Portal 
BBC Look North presenter, Harry Gration, will be the compere when Bishop Toby Howarth, the Bishop of Bradford, talks about his life and his favourite music at Bradford Cathedral next month. 'Bishop on a Beach' on September 21st promises to be full of surprises, and proceeds go to the Friends of Bradford Cathedral. More here 
Stuart Townend is one of today's leading worship songwriters and on Sunday 23 September he will be in concert at Keighley Shared Church as part of his Courage tour.  Rev'd Mike Cansdale says 'We are really looking forward to hosting Stuart for his only evening in West Yorkshire. In this tour he connects with some of the challenging questions of life '  More details here 
General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into effect on 25th May and because of the high demand on training sessions offered by the diocese earlier this year, two more sessions with the Diocesan Registrar are being organised for October 3 or 7. Booking is essential - more here 
A day for lay leaders, PCC members and those concerned with church growth takes place on October 6. Those wanting their church to become welcoming and mission focussed are particularly invited to Growth: The Big Turnaround. It takes place from 10am at  St John the Baptist, Knaresborough. More here 
A conference on faith and business for  Christians in business takes place at Bradford Cathedral on Saturday 13 October, 9.30am-4pm. Loving God and Neighbour in Business is a joint conference between the Cathedral and the Thinking Faith Network. More here 
The Growing the Rural Church (GtRC) 2018 day conference takes place on October 31 and will explore how rural churches can use their buildings creatively to support their ministry and better serve their communities. Key-note speakers include Bishop of Ripon, Dr Helen-Ann Hartley. Find out more here

The church of All Saints, Ilkley, which traces worship back to the 7th century has appointed a new Heritage Manager.  Carry Lynott will be helping with the development of new heritage resources at a church which as seen Christian worship since 627 AD. More here 
900 years of history comes alive at Halifax Minster during its Heritage Weekend next month, with activities and performances day and night including  the ' Sans Illuminaire' evening"Sewing Solder" Lt Col Neil Stace, a finalist in the Great British Sewing Bee, will give expert tuition  - find out more here 
Christians from churches across Leeds have once again been offering practical help and a listening ear at this year's Leeds Festival at Bramham Park. Find out what went on here
The BBC Radio 4 programme, Any Questions, will be coming from Leeds MInster on Friday 7 September.  The panellists reflect a range of political perspectives and the Minster is inviting interested people to be part of the audience. Find out more here 
Retired Yorkshire Dales vicar and former RAF chaplain, the Revd Ian Greenhalgh, was the guest of honour in Settle for the opening of a new WWI exhibition exploring the final few months of the war.  '1918: Long Last Mile' is on display until November 14. More here 
An open air service to commemorate  the eight million horses, donkeys and mules that died in service during World War 1 drew a congregation of 200, including many on horseback. Four churches in Coverdale, North Yorkshire, joined forces to host the open-air War Horse Remembrance Service. A north Featherstone church has been awarded £800 for projects designed to reach out to the community.  The congregation at All Saints'  will use the money for two projects, one print based and the other digital. More
Wakefield Cathedral has been named in the top ten inspirational places to visit during the Heritage Open Days this year.  It is one of only three cathedrals and seven churches singled out on the Explore Churches website by the National Churches Trust.  Find out more
Iranian refugees who had sought asylum in Wakefield and baptised in Wakefield Cathedral have been confirmed in Gateshead.  It was another step on their Christian journey and the sub Dean of Wakefield, Canon Tony Macpherson was there to witness it. More here

Praying together across the diocese & world
The September edition of the Prayer Diary is now online to download.There are fresh prayers for Sudan as well as prayers for Tanzania and for new deacons and priests, plus those in training. Download prayers here.
The diocese is looking for a representative to the Church of England Youth Council.  It's an exciting opportunity to represent your own and other's views on this national body.  If you know someone aged 16-23 who might be interested, then check out the Leeds Children and Youth Facebook page here 
"Take responsibility for your discipleship ...join the online learning community" urged Bishop Nick at the close of last month's Diocesan Lay Conference. The learning portal is gradually being populated by new courses and information - and you can join up now by visiting it and registering here 
The next deadline to apply for a grant from
the National Churches Trust Maintenance Grants Programme  of between £500 and £3000 towards the costs of small, urgent repairs to your church building is 26th September. More here 
'Creationtide' or the 'Season of Creation' is the period in the annual church calendar from 1st September to 4th October dedicated to God as Creator and Sustainer of all life.  To inspire you and help you explore and celebrate Creationtide new liturgies, services and prayers from across the church have been collected here 
Christian Aid Harvest Appeal
Christian Aid's Harvest Appeal is now live. It aims to support w omen in poor rural communities, in countries like Burkina Faso, Honduras, Malawi and Ethiopia. They often struggle to earn a living because of climate change and drought, while prevalent beliefs can make it hard for women to get loans or start businesses. Dawn Savidge, a Children, Young People and Families Team Member for the Diocese has produced a video to make churches aware of the Higher Tour coming to Yorkshire in Spring 2019. From Monday 18th March to Saturday 29th March the tour will be focused on local schools with concerts in Leeds and Wakefield.
