Formation Opportunities in DioNeb

Racial Reconciliation & Sacred Ground Ministry

ARE YOU READY for Lent Madness??

Lent Madness is a Saintly competition organized by Forward Movement and patterned after the NCAA Basketball tradition of March Madness. This year the Racial Reconciliation/Sacred Ground Ministry encourages participation in DioNeb to make sure Nebraska’s own Fr. Hiram Hisanori Kano gets strong support. Perhaps we can help him advance through all 5 rounds and win the coveted Golden Halo!

Saintly battles occur in the court of public opinion as people vote each day for their choice, and the winner moves on to the next round. Forward Movement publishes information on all competitors here. Lent Madness brackets can be ordered NOW. The competition begins Mar. 6. Daily time for learning, praying, and meditating about holy people can be a useful Lenten observance. Many Nebraska Episcopalians are familiar with Fr. Kano, but we’ll be publishing more information soon. Questions? contact Steve Shively

“HOW MUCH DO YOU KNOW . . . About Important African Americans?”

We continue our Black History Month series highlighting prominent African Americans. Select the response or responses you believe are correct. The theme of Black History Month this year is African Americans and Labor.

Last week’s challenge: Olivia Hooker was...

  1. The first African American woman to enter the U.S. Coast Guard.
  2. The first African American woman elected Mayor of Topeka, Kansas.
  3. The first African American woman to earn the rank of Full Professor (Psychology) at the University of Alabama.
  4. A survivor of the Tulsa Race Massacre that decimated Black Wall Street in the city’s Greenwood District.
  5. An outspoken Black educator opposed to the Brown vs. Topeka Board of Education decision of the Supreme Court.
  6. Selected by President Barack Obama as the U.S. Ambassador to Haiti.

The correct answers are 1 and 4. Hooker lived in Tulsa when the Greenwood District, also known as Black Wall Street, was destroyed by Ku Klux Klan members. Learn more.

This week’s challenge: Last week featured a person few of us have heard of but who should be more widely known. This week we feature George Washington Carver, a person more widely known; however, there is still much to learn. Select all correct responses. George Washington Carver was...

  1. Born into slavery in Missouri in 1864.
  2. Became the first Black student at Iowa State University in 1891.
  3. While teaching at Tuskegee Institute, designed a mobile classroom to take education to farmers in isolated areas.
  4. Created and distributed many recipes using alternative crops to promote better nutrition.
  5. Was a strong believer in Christianity who led Bible classes at Tuskegee.
  6. Was admired by Henry Ford, who provided financial support for Carver’s research.

Bonus question. Select the correct response. In 1941 Time magazine labeled Carver

  1. A Black Albert Einstein.
  2. A Black Thomas Jefferson.
  3. A Black Leonardo da Vinci.
  4. A Black Galileo.

Check next week’s Ministry Memo for the answer and a new challenge!

Education for Ministry

Lent Resources

It’s that time again to share Lenten resources for individual or group study. This year EfM Coordinator Sandra Squires recommends:

  1. Living Compass - An inexpensive devotional that may be purchased in paper or digitally for a nominal cost, or downloaded as a PDF for free.
  2. The Way of Julian of Norwich - A book for those who love Julian of Norwich and wish to spend a little time with her this Lent. Available in Kindle or paperback.
  3. Still Standing: A Lent course based on the Elton John movie Rocketman - This choice is a fun approach that I assure you will enjoy. Rachel Mann is an English priest known for linking scripture to popular culture. Available in Kindle or paperback.
  4. The Disciple's Way - And finally, from Forward Movement, "The Disciple’s Way issues a stirring call to individuals and the wider church to practice seven steps of discipleship: turn, follow, learn, pray, serve, worship, and share. In this season of Lent, embrace the seven steps with encouragement from the original publication and daily meditations written by current leaders of the church. As the first Disciple’s Way promised, this journey is high adventure, requiring time, effort, pluck, and money. Following Jesus is not easy, but it is The Way.” Available in Kindle or print.

Our Stories

From Barb Hall

DioNeb UTO Coordinator

I recently received the 2024 numbers for the Diocese of Nebraska from the National United Thank Offering, (UTO), and I believe they are awesome. In 2023, ten parishes participated in UTO, and in 2024 the number increased to eighteen and my heart is full of gratitude. Thank you Nebraska.

I am, however, sad to report that I must resign as UTO Coordinator for the Diocese of Nebraska due to health reasons. I have enjoyed representing Nebraska, and I am grateful for the opportunity.

UTO’s focus is to promote gratitude and support innovative projects that address needs around the world. UTO programs emphasize the act of giving thanks for blessings received by encouraging individuals to make offerings based on their gratitude.

The UTO Coordinator is primarily responsible for promoting and managing the UTO program within the diocese. The volunteer position involves tasks like educating parishioners about UTO, assist with Ingatherings, facilitate writing grants, and communicate with parishes throughout the diocese.

I encourage anyone who is interested to contact me, and I will stay on until a replacement is found. Also, if any parish needs assistance or materials for a Lenten ingathering please contact me at the email address below.

This is such a wonderful ministry.

Grateful,

Barbara Hall - warnbarb18303fl@hotmail.com
