Weekly eNews - May 25, 2023

|
On Sunday, May 21, I had the pleasure of attending the Chamber of Commerce Annual Darien Dash. While I am not a participant in the race, I had an opportunity to meet the participants, provide them with a brief “send-off” speech, and then ride in the Pace car as we navigate the race route.
This year, I had the special privilege of introducing Darien’s “Miss Northern Suburbs” Paige Hollendonner who will be competing this June in the “Miss Illinois Scholarship Program” in Marion, Illinois. I met Paige back in December when she joined us for our Darien Historical Society Tree Lighting Ceremony, and have assisted her in her quest to provide community service to such groups as the Darien Lions, Darien Chamber and the Darien Woman’s Club. Paige has been more than willing to serve our Darien Community, and she is a young woman who clearly knows that we each have a responsibility to give back to a community that serves to enrich our lives.
Paige will spend one week competing against twenty-five young women, who like herself have the dream of being named Miss Illinois. She will compete in an extended interview process, talent presentation (she will sign language Katy Perry’s “Fireworks”) and participate in an evening gown competition. When you discuss all of this with her, she comes across as a very confident young woman, and that confidence is contagious.
As she prepares for her competition downstate, we wish her well, and we want her to know that Darien is extremely proud of her, and win or lose, we will welcome her back to Darien saying “thank you” for representing our community and for your past and future service. Best Wishes Paige!!!

COVID-19 Test Scam Warning
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) ended the federal Public Health Emergency for COVID-19, declared under Section 319 of the Public Health Service Act, on May 11, 2023. At home COVID-19 tests will no longer covered by Medicare as of last Thursday.
As the Public Health Emergency has come to an end, there have been an increased number of calls regarding beneficiaries being sent and billed for at home COVID-19 tests that they did not order.
Scammers will sometimes call beneficiaries over the phone to confirm their Medicare number and personal information under the guise of sending "free" at home COVID-19 tests. Fraudsters are also stealing Medicare numbers and beneficiary information without talking to them and billing Medicare for these fraudulent tests.
Please read your Medicare Summary Notice (MSN) and look for any charges that look suspicious from companies or doctors you do not know. If you have received any at home COVID-19 tests that you did not order, please call the Illinois SMP and report those charges.
The Illinois SMP is also here to offer assistance if you feel you have been affected by any potential Medicare fraud, please call the Illinois SMP at AgeOptions at (800)699-9043 or visit www.illinoissmp.org.

Business Spotlight
Burrito Paradise
7516 S. Cass Ave. (Brookahven Plaza)
630-968-0930
Burrito Paradise is an authentic Mexican restaurant that serves traditional Mexican cuisine. We are a staple in the Darien community and beyond. Our chef Armando Garcia has been with us since we opened over 8 years ago. We feature homemade salsas, guacamole, tamales, horchata, and more which are prepared every morning. We are best known for our steak. It comes from a hanging tender that we hand cut daily and trim all the fat. We add our secret seasoning as we prepare our steak to order. We also have 7 different types of meat to choose from including chicken, beef, al pastor, carnitas, and barbacoa to name a few. We have a great selection of menu items such as burritos, tacos, fajitas, enchiladas, gorditas, tortas, quesadillas, homemade soups such as Caldo de Rez, Caldo de Pollo, and Posole. We have a great vegetarian menu. We offer lunch and dinner specials daily and don't forget about Taco Tuesday at a great price. Enjoy homemade chips and salsa while you dine in. We offer carryout, online ordering, and delivery through Doordash, Uber, and Grubhub. We are open 7 days a week until 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. on the weekends. We also do a tremendous amount of catering. Hope to see you soon.
