A Real Bargain!
The TAD Board always asks itself: How can we make FCSI The Americas better for our members? What services can we add to make your membership even more important to all of our colleagues? One such discussion recently took place and its topic is especially very “near and dear” to all of our design brethren: BIM and Revit!
In short, we have recently asked a task committee (shall I say challenged them) to create a “best practices” guideline for the BIM and Revit platforms. We set the task of how best and how easily can a full-blown BIM/Revit guidelines program be developed for use by our members? I personally believe that if we are able to accomplish this task, then a very meaningful educational goal will be reached. The results could be enormous if our members could access a site that can not only explain the detailed modeling requirements but also could take people through a narrative and possibly interactive discussion of the methodologies as to how BIM works and how it can be most easily integrated into any firm’s work. At that point, regardless of company size, financial resources available, staff expertise levels employed etc, the playing field could and would be evened out and any firm that desires to do so could then easily enter the wonderful BIM/Revit world! The system itself and implementation of same, could be proprietary to FCSI-The Americas!
Obviously, there are a number of major issues that need to be worked out, such as how to draw and label the families of equipment, the nomenclature to address this information, page set-up and formatting requirements, etc. The biggest issue, however, is how best to obtain a great deal of information from our members relating to the successful systems they are using, and then streamlining all of their input to come to a consensus on what the best final solution would be for our long-term use.
Finally, introducing and getting positive votes to implement the program as a Society recommended standard, would be the final test! After all of this, we’ll have to integrate with an FCSI Worldwide model, working closely with our Worldwide colleagues doing similar work. It all sounds complicated and time consuming…and it is, but it’s a super important new program that will pay major dividends to our membership if it can be developed. This is an important project - we have to do it and we ARE doing it as we speak. Stay tuned folks…great things are in the works!
All my best to each of you,
William J. Caruso, FFCSI (PP)
Chair – FCSI the Americas Division

Medical Update for Fellow FCSI Member
As many of you may know, Cini Little Vice President and FCSI Associate Member, Orlando Espinosa III, has been awaiting a liver transplant due to a damaged liver from a gallbladder surgery in December 2017. Following the surgery it took several months to pinpoint the damage to the liver, but once discovered the focus has been on getting Orlando well and ultimately a liver transplant from a deceased or live donor is needed. Orlando has experienced a 118 pound weight loss since his gallbladder surgery in 2017 and doctors have placed him on a crash wellness program including a feeding tube, physical therapy, and home nurse visit and care to build strength and increase stamina in the hopes of getting him healthy and strong enough to be a candidate for liver transplant surgery.
Orlando and his family are actively pursuing all possible outlets for identifying a potential living partial liver donor and FCSI wants to help get the word out in case there are Industry peers who may consider being a donor. Potential donors would need to meet the following pre-qualifications:
O+ or O+ compatible blood type
Ideal age is 20-50 (possibly younger or older if ideal candidate)
Good general health
If you are considering being a donor or want to learn more, you can access the donor application
here
and can learn more about liver transplant surgery
here
. All inquiries and applications are confidential and Orlando will never know who applied or who was accepted or rejected.
Please feel free to share this information with friends and associates who are not members of FCSI to ensure the message reaches as many potential candidates as possible. And, of course, please keep Orlando and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Brazilian Consultants Learn More about the Technology
of Speed Ovens
Part of the responsibility of being an FCSI member is to seek continuing knowledge in your field of work. Twenty-five FCSI consultants gathered in Brazil on July 18 to participate in another training conducted by manufacturer Prática Klimaquip. During the course, consultant members learned about the latest technology of Speed Ovens, their applications, programming, and daily cleaning and maintenance procedures. The program also provided information related to the varying oven sizes and installation with ventless equipment. Being an FCSI Corporate Member, Prática is the first company in Brazil to offer regular technical courses to FCSI consultants in Latin America.
Emmanuel Melo, FCSI, is Design Director at StudioIno and talked about learning more about the ovens’ technical details during the class. “I could understand the technology embedded in this product in depth. I understood how the different heat sources are produced in the equipment and how they are combined to prepare food with quality and speed.” Speed Ovens offer innovative new possibilities for the foodservice market. The equipment unites up to three different heat transmission processes: microwave, forced air and radiation, enabling the completion and even the complete preparation of dishes in seconds.

Durante o curso, consultant members learned about the latest technology of Speed Ovens, its applications, programming, and daily cleaning and maintaining procedures. The program also provided information related to the ovens sizes and installation with ventless equipment.
