APRIL 2026 NEWSLETTER

Southern Industrial Contractors (SIC) was proud to support the successful execution

of a major pellet storage and handling expansion for one of the leading steel producers in

North America. This large-scale industrial project involved the construction and installation

of critical infrastructure supporting the storage, handling, and movement of iron oxide pellets

used in steel production. This scope included complex material handling systems,

conveyor support structures, equipment installation, structural steel, mechanical

assemblies, and coordination of work within an active operating facility.

This facility is the United States' largest direct reduced iron (DRI) operation

having achieved record production rates exceeding 7,900 metric tons per day

with an annual production capacity of approximately 2.5 million metric tons

of DRI. Ore arrives in vessels from Brazil, Canada and Sweden,

with each ship carrying up to 100,000 metric tons. Once at the

facility's port, the ore is transferred via a mile-long pipe belt to the

newly constructed ore yard, which can store up to 800,000 metric tons.

Southern Industrial Contractors self-performed the following:

  • excavation and embankment
  • underground utility installation
  • concrete demolition of existing foundations and footings
  • installation of H-piles for the pellet stacker, pellet conveyor system, four 4500-ton storage (day) bins, combined wet/dry screening station, and filter press building with 45-foot diameter clarifier
  • installation of new equipment foundations
  • installation of epoxy grouting for new mechanical equipment
  • installation of structural steel and mechanical equipment
  • installation of wall sheeting and roof cladding for numerous structures throughout the project

SIC's Mechanical and Structural Steel scope of work for the new Iron Oxide Pellet Handling System included the following:

  • Modifications to the existing Transfer Tower TT2 including chute work for installation of Transfer Conveyor R7-C01
  • Installation of Transfer Conveyor R7-C01, installation of stacking conveyor R7-C02, installation of Reclaim Conveyor R7-C04, installation of Day Bin Feed Conveyor R7-C05, installation of Day Bin unloading conveyor R8-C05, of Product Conveyor R8-C06, installation of Conveyor Re-Entry at Product Shuttle Conveyor R8-C07, and installation of Fines Conveyor R8-C08. This work included the installation of conveyor components, conveyor bents, conveyor walkways, conveyor hood covers, new access stairs, emergency egress ladders to grade, and performing necessary conveyor adjustments.
  • Installation of new Transfer Towers TT3, TT4, and TT5 which included installation of structural steel, installation of impact crushers / screens, installation of return idlers, performing necessary chute work, and adjustments to head pulley and tail pulley sections
  • Installation of Reclaim Hopper #1 R7-H01, Reclaim Hopper #2 R7-H02, and Reclaim Hopper #3 R7-H03
  • Installation of 4 Day Bins which included installation all structural steel, conveyors, chute work, exterior cladding, stairs, walkways, ladders, and handrails
  • Installation of new Screening Station Tower R8-B01, R8-VF01, R8-VF02, R8-V501, and R8-V502 which included all structural steel, conveyors, chute work, exterior cladding, stairs, walkways, ladders, and handrails
  • Erection and installation of one stacker R7-ST01 including crane rail installation
  • SIC self-performed all of the above scopes of work.

Working within an active operating mill as

well as highly congested work areas with numerous other trades, SIC successfully

completed more than 276,312

man-hours with zero recordable incidents. Through close and constant collaboration

with the client and fellow trades, the team implemented a comprehensive site-specific safety program that led to this outstanding achievement. SIC is proud to have earned

our latest EMR of .62, reflecting our

unwavering commitment to safety excellence.
