It Takes a Village

For an entire year, Lisa, Community Support Program guest and single mom of four boys, was determined to move her family into a new apartment that was wheelchair accessible. She took the initiative and very long journey of navigating the laborious processes involved with moving to a new home.

Lisa’s hard work came to fruition: she and her family secured assistance to move into her dream wheelchair-accessible apartment. Overjoyed, she exclaimed that “everything worked out perfectly!”

Lisa's journey to housing stability began in our Shelter Program when a few months after graduating Shelter and moving into her own home, she received a scary and life-altering diagnosis of cancer – but she did not face it alone.

Throughout her treatments, Lisa’s family received unparalleled support from our incredible network of Congregation partners, volunteers, and the Shelter Program community. Volunteers pitched in to ensure Lisa’s family was taken care of, and two years later, with a “village” of support by her side, Lisa moved into her dream apartment.

Lisa and her family are forever grateful for the support they received over the years and look forward to giving back to Family Promise!

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
Meet Maria Arostegui, Girl Scout

When did you join Girl Scouts, and what level are you working toward?
I joined Girl Scouts when I was in kindergarten, and I am currently working on my Gold Award.

How did you get involved with Family Promise (FP)?
Before the pandemic started, my family always volunteered at a local church in our town to serve dinner for the families at Family Promise.

Can you tell us about your project and what it involves?
The project is focused on increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of Family Promise. In turn, clients may receive all of the benefits that the organization has to offer at a greater and faster rate.

Describe a positive experience you’ve had through your project.
I was fortunate enough to interview a former client of Family Promise, and it was incredible to hear her family's story from her and her children's perspectives.

What do you like most about volunteering for FP?
I think that what I like the most about volunteering for Family Promise is seeing how much of a positive impact the organization has made, not only on the clients, but also on the staff and the young volunteers.

Disability Pride Month

What is Disability Pride Month? On July 26, 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act into law. Each July is celebrated as Disability Pride Month in commemoration of the historic moment.

Disability Pride is a movement intended to celebrate the history of the Disability Rights movement and people with disabilities as positive contributors to society.

The Disability Pride Flag, designed by Ann Magill, was created to encompass all disabilities.

The black background mourns disabled people who have died due to negligence, suicide,
rebellion, illness, and eugenics. The stripe’s color represents disability types:

  • Red: physical disabilities
  • Gold: cognitive and intellectual disabilities
  • White: nonvisible and undiagnosed disabilities
  • Blue: psychiatric disabilities
  • Green: sensory disabilities
