The award – a collaboration between the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) and the Office of Disability Employment Policy – recognizes federal contractors who are leaders in expanding opportunity to Americans with disabilities in the workplace.
The deadline extension means your organization now has more time to complete and submit your EDI Award application!
This year's Award recipients will be recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor for their work and will receive a three-year moratorium for OFCCP compliance evaluations. Additionally, a post-award "Year of Engagement" will provide opportunities for contractors to share their best practices on disability inclusion with other employers.
During this extension, employers who have already submitted an EDI Award application can update their application if desired.

JAN Launches Refreshed Workplace Accommodations Toolkit
The Job Accommodation Network (JAN) recently refreshed its
Workplace Accommodation Toolkit
—a free, comprehensive resource for employers seeking to move beyond basic compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act in order to create more disability-inclusive workplaces.
The Toolkit includes actionable accommodation policies and processes from leading businesses; forms, training presentations, and role-play videos; and best and emerging practices for creating a disability-inclusive workplace across all phases of the employment life cycle. As a result, it is an invaluable resource for recruiters and hiring managers; supervisors and managers; reasonable accommodation subject matter experts; technology professionals; and employees with disabilities and their allies.
Additions for this refresh include a drawer of tools for IT Professionals responsible for digital accessibility; the Solution Showcase - short videos of various technology solutions that can be implemented as effective job accommodations; and a new role-play video depicting the performance management of an employee with an opioid addiction.

The Right Talent, Right Now – Get Ready for NDEAM 2019

Every October, this nationwide campaign is a time to celebrate the skills and talents that people with disabilities bring to America's workplaces. It is a great time for your organization to demonstrate your commitment to disability inclusion.
This year's NDEAM theme is The Right Talent, Right Now, which underscores the essential role that workers with disabilities play in America's economic success, especially in an era when historically low unemployment and global competition are creating a high demand for skilled talent.
Need ideas for how to participate in NDEAM? The campaign's national sponsor, the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP), offers a helpful
list of ways to capitalize on NDEAM
. Suggestions include promoting NDEAM on social media, hosting educational staff events, publishing articles about the campaign, issuing an NDEAM press release, and more. ODEP's toolkit provides suggested language that you can customize for your particular needs.

Disability not a barrier: At a time of low unemployment, employers tap a new talent pool

After not working for eight years because of a visual disability, Samantha Reeves speaks with palpable pride of the day in April when she officially became an Oklahoma state employee.
“It’s changed my life,'' says Reeves, 30, who secured a position with the Department of Rehabilitation's Career Planning Center through Galt, a foundation that helps people with disabilities find jobs.
"The only time I ever got out of my house was to go to the doctor, and you can’t imagine what that does to someone’s mood,'' she says. Working "provided the opportunity to let my strengths actually shine so people get to know the real me, and not just see my disability.’’
Institutional investors, including 15 state treasurers, have called on businesses whose shares they own to make hiring workers with disabilities a priority. Together, they represent over $2.1 trillion in assets.

Identifying Trends & Gaps through the Disability Equality Index

180 corporations participated in the 2019 DEI, a historic milestone signifying a 24% increase from 2018. Top participating industries include:
- Technology (11.7%)
- Financial Services (8.9%)
- Insurance (8.9%)
- Healthcare (7.8%)
There are an estimated 1 Billion number of People with Disabilities worldwide. The unemployment rate for People with Disabilities is 2X that of People without Disabilities.

Henry Viscardi Achievement Award Nominations
The Viscardi Center is currently accepting nominations for the 2019 Henry Viscardi Achievement Awards. Named for the Center’s founder and a premier disability advocate, Dr. Henry Viscardi, Jr., these awards honor leaders who carry on his legacy by improving quality of life for people with disabilities, including through employment. The deadline for nomination submissions is September 16, 2019.

Employer Policy Development Center
The Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) announced the awarding of $2 million to Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, for the first year of a 4-year cooperative agreement to operate an employer-focused disability policy development and technical assistance center. This center will build upon the prior work of ODEP’s Employer Assistance and Resource Network on Disability Inclusion (EARN). The primary goals of this new center are to:
- Conduct research;
- Engage with the business community;
- Identify effective policies and practices that support business needs; and
- Provide resources, technical assistance, and training to help public- and private-sector employers recruit, hire, retain, and advance individuals with disabilities.

Podcast: Making Artificial Intelligence Inclusive for Hiring and HR
The Partnership on Employment and Accessible Technology (PEAT)
featured a podcast interview on "Making Artificial Intelligence Inclusive for Hiring and Human Resources". The guest on the podcast was Dan Nichols of Candidit, who is using artificial intelligence to build a more inclusive hiring platform. The platform incorporates inclusive talent competencies built to reduce bias and better match employers to candidates with the specific skills they need.

Announcing Section 503 Focused Review Webinars

The Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) is dedicated to promoting disability inclusion in the workplace. With the launch of Section 503 Focused Reviews this fall, OFCCP has released compliance assistance resources to help employers and workers to better understand the law and how the reviews will be conducted.
To help contractors prepare for Section 503 Focused Reviews, OFCCP will be hosting a webinar discussing the scheduling process, the focused review process, common problem areas, and best practices. During the webinar, contractors will have the opportunity to ask questions and will be provided helpful information and resources available to assist them in increasing the employment of individuals with disabilities.

Gallaudet 2nd Annual Information Technology Summit

The “Gallaudet 2nd Annual Information Technology Summit”, an all day event held at Gallaudet University, will connect talented students, both Information Technology (IT) majors and Business majors, with employers who are serious about hiring students with disabilities, specifically deaf and hard of hearing students at Gallaudet University. Students will learn about emerging trends in Information Technology including Cybersecurity, Web and Program Development. Students will also meet professionals in the field, both hearing and deaf, who will inspire students to consider the many shapes and forms of careers in Information Technology.
Panel presentations will feature IT professionals, who will discuss their roles and responsibilities in their jobs and about the many opportunities that exist in government, private industry and the corporate world. The need for individuals trained in IT is even found in smaller companies, creating unlimited opportunities. Students will listen to stories from professional deaf employees as they discuss strategies for breaking into the field of cybersecurity and becoming successful.
The workshop will include a combination of panel presentations along with built in networking opportunities for students to meet and talk with IT specialists. Managers and recruiters representing businesses and government agencies will share with students what qualities and skills they look for in a candidate. Students will bring resumes for networking and on site interviewing.
In addition to companies spearheading this event, other interested employers will be participating and encouraging students to consider the advantages of working in different environments.
As many of today’s employers are focused on diversifying their workforce and hiring more individuals with disabilities, there is an advantage to developing relationships with Gallaudet students, faculty, and Career Services staff. Events such as this will be beneficial in terms of creating a pipeline of qualified applicants for the increasing number of opportunities in the field of technology.
