From our Executive Director
|
Taking a moment to acknowledge the disability rights powerhouse, Judy Heumann. Her work will continue to have a profound ripple effect, even though she is no longer with us.
Judith “Judy” Heumann—widely regarded as “the mother” of the disability rights movement—passed away in Washington, D.C. on the afternoon of March 4, 2023. Judy was at the forefront of major disability rights demonstrations, helped spearhead the passage of disability rights legislation, founded national and international disability advocacy organizations, held senior federal government positions, co-authored her memoir, Being Heumann, and its Young Adult version, Rolling Warrior, and was featured in the Oscar-nominated documentary film, Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution.

I had an opportunity to meet Judy several years ago. The following quote is a good summary of my meeting with her. “Some people say that what I did changed the world,” she wrote, “But really, I simply refused to accept what I was told about who I could be. And I was willing to make a fuss about it.” I thoroughly enjoy a person who is willing to make a fuss for the greater good.
This started me thinking about the leaders we have within the Disability:IN Wisconsin community. Derek Smith comes to mind as a leader who launched Disability:IN Wisconsin and has been a strong advocate for disability inclusion. In celebration of Derek’s work, we are again opening up nominations for the Derek Smith Leadership Award for Disability Inclusion. This award recognizes an individual who has developed or influenced business disability employment programs and/or services that resulted in measurable, significant and positive outcomes, dramatically improving disability employment opportunities.
And, new this year, Disability:IN Wisconsin is proud to present the 1st Annual Top Disability-Friendly Employer in WisconsinTM Award, honoring a company who is working to achieve disability inclusion and equity.
Award winners will be announced at the 2023 Disability:IN Wisconsin Summit on October 12, 2023
