Celebrate Disability Pride Month with us!

Every July is Disability Pride Month in Maryland. Disability Pride is the idea that people with disabilities should be proud of their disability. It is a chance to celebrate and honor disability as a part of a person's identity. Disability is just one part of who each person is.

People with disabilities are a large and diverse group. That means people with disabilities include people of all ages and from all backgrounds and cultures.

July is a perfect month to recognize Disability Pride as we celebrate the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA is the law that protects people's civil rights and helps make sure there is access, equality, and inclusion for people with disabilities. This year is the 33rd anniversary!

Ken Capone accepts award from Secretary Beatty.

To honor this month, we want nominations for our second annual Governor's Award for Disability Culture and the Governor's Award for Disability Achievements. These awards will highlight how people with disabilities live, learn, work, and play in the community. Last year's award for Disability Culture went to Darren Guest and Sarah Stup. Last year's award for Disability Achievement went to Ken Capone and Janice Jackson.

Secretary Beatty presents award to Janice Jackson.

The Governor’s Award for Disability Culture focuses on people with disabilities and the arts. This includes painting, sculpture, music, theater, performance, and other kinds of art.

The Governor’s Award for Disability Achievements focuses on people with disabilities who promote equal opportunity, access, and choice in their life or the lives of others.

Send us your nominations! Tell us how that person expands, creates, or improves disability culture or achievements in Maryland.

Fill out a nomination form. You can nominate one person or more than one person. Fill out one form for each person you nominate.

Awards will be presented in October at an event.
