“My name is Teeva. I am a young adult with unique abilities and limited expressive language. My main mode of communication is through the visual expression of my art. Community Habilitation (Com Hab), provided by Starbridge, is one of the elements of support in my life, helping me navigate society, learn concretely, and develop relevant capacities for social contribution.”  

“I would say to other artists with disabilities, please don't deprive yourself and the community from the reflection of the light of your unique gift."

Teeva’s mother, Tabby, comments on her daughter’s gift. “Teeva's soulful images, transcends the limitation of the spoken words and invites a dialogue between the artwork and the observer. My husband and I learned to follow Teeva's uninhibited light and ensure the support mechanisms are in place for her continued development and progress."

"Among her supports are the army of service providers over the last three decades who have become cherished family members in Teeva's circle of support, as well as the dedicated team at Painted Table Studio with Mr. Mark Rodgers, who continue to explore creative ways to cultivate Teeva's abilities as an artist. These efforts have allowed Teeva to have art installations in various states in the U.S. as well as commissioned pieces in private homes.”

Jacob is a teen who recently participated in one of Starbridge's Signature Series, Creating a Life After High School.

“In general, Creating a Life after High School helped me understand options for when high school is done. In terms of my art, I thought about ways I could earn money making and selling pens. With my Creating a Life grant, I got materials to help me start this business. I was able to purchase tools and a membership to the Rochester Makerspace. At the Makerspace, I learn valuable lessons that I can use in my business. I am also meeting other people who share like-minded hobbies.”

“I would tell other artists with disabilities to keep pursuing your dreams. Surround yourself with people who understand you and can teach you - maybe a little bit older so they can mentor you. When I make pens, I feel good about myself because I can create things that other people like. Before I didn't know how to make finished products that I was proud enough to sell.”

Jacob’s mother, Julie, says, “My whole family supports Jacob. Not only does he create beautiful pens that he is proud of, the hours he spends working on them calms him and brings him happiness. School and life in general can be difficult, but working on his pens brings peace and a feeling of accomplishment.”
