Undone and Remade

"Recognizing that the favor God extends is accomplished in no way due to some superior worthiness, the life of a Christian believer is grounded in humility. Reformed theologians unfailingly teach that 'the elect are saved by grace alone, so that no one may boast’ (Ephesians 2:9). But Reformed theologians often emphasize that this humility issues not from a perfunctory recognition a person has received or a gift he or she has not earned. Rather, the humility that, ideally, characterizes Christian life ensues when individuals embrace the transforming reality that they have been undone and remade by a grace that lays claim to them even though they are—in and of themselves—entirely unsuitable."

Disaster Response Training Sunday

Join us in the Land Building following 10:30 a.m. worship this Sunday, September 14, for a disaster response training session with Presbyterian Disaster Assistance National Coordinator, Kathy Lee-Cornell. Lunch and childcare will be provided. We will learn how we can best plan and respond to disasters here in New Orleans and beyond. Our RHINO (Rebuilding Hope In New Orleans) ministry is continuing its work by forming a new team that will train, plan, and coordinate our disaster response efforts from supply drives and distribution to volunteers and community aid. If you are interested in joining this team and/or coming to the training, please email Pastor Sarah at sarah@scapc.org.

First Youth Group & Youth Parents Night

Youth Group kicks off this Sunday, September 14, from 5:00-7:30 in the Youth Room on the third floor. All 6th-12th graders are invited! We're also having a Welcome Party for all parents of youth at 6 p.m. in the Land Building, so come enjoy this time and get to know your fellow parents! Visit our youth page or email Chris Hazlaris with any questions.

New RHINO & Aden Coordinator

Join us in welcoming our new RHINO (Rebuilding Hope in New Orleans) Coordinator Luke Kellett! He will also work with SCAPC’s Aden Program for Elder Care. Luke grew up in Cincinatti, Ohio and is in his second year serving as a Young Adult Volunteer in New Orleans. He writes, “Over the past year, I have been growing in faith, building community, and learning how to live out God’s call through service. I’ve been blessed to help in many ways, from supporting local ministries to even lending a hand with the Dungeons & Dragons group here. I also have a passion for photography, games, and sharing meals with others, and I cherish the joy and support of my family.”

Needle Arts Group Sunday

Our new Needle Arts Group will meet this Sunday, September 14, from 4-6 p.m. in the Land Building. If you enjoy crocheting, knitting, sewing, cross-stitching, or any other needle arts, come join us!

Join an Usher Team!

Serving as an usher is one of the most important (and fun!) ways to volunteer for the church. This role can involve anything from passing the offering plates, recording attendance, assisting congregants with special needs, and most importantly, greeting everyone as they gather for worship. Each usher team serves two months of the year. To join a team, contact Geoff Snodgrass at gpsnodgrass@gmail.com.

Program of Hope Clothing Drive

During the month of September, the Community Ministry Committee is collecting clothing for the Program of Hope homeless ministry. Specifically requested are adult clothing items and shoes (no suits or children’s clothing, please). There is a bin in Frampton Fellowship Hall where items can be deposited.

Would You Like to Join a Supper Club?

Supper Clubs are monthly small group gatherings where participants can get to know each other better and share the fellowship of a simple meal. Interested in joining? Let us know your availability and preferences by filling out the survey at the link below and we will assign you to a group. Please fill out even if you participated in a supper club last year. The deadline is September 30.

Medication Collection for Cuba

For the month of September, Presbyterian Women are collecting donations of pediatric and adult over-the-counter medications (with the exception of liquids and gummies) for our sister churches in Cardenas, Cuba. A SCAPC group will be travelling to Cuba next month to distribute these and other supplies to El Fuerte and Juan G. Hall Presbyterian Churches. There is a wicker donation basket by the Chapel entrance where donations can be placed.

SCAPC PW Missions Coordinator Lorrie Powel writes, "On my trip to Cuba in February, I learned first hand how much these medications are needed and appreciated. We met a physician who carries medications to ill patients via her scooter and delivers them directly to people in their homes. We also met one of the elders at El Fuerte Church, Milagros, who is in charge of keeping the medications safe. (See photo of Milagros showing us the medicine cabinet which is kept under lock/key). It is indeed an important ministry."

Men's Retreat

Registration is now open for the 2025 Men’s Retreat taking place Friday-Saturday, October 17-18 in Pass Christian, Mississippi. Our theme is “(Un)Mitigated Faith: The Promise and Peril of Technology and Faith”, led by Rev. Dr. Tony Sundermeier of First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, GA. For details and registration, click here. The retreat deadline is September 30.

Congregational Meeting Moved to Sept. 28

Please note the congregational meeting originally scheduled for this Sunday will now take place on Sunday, September 28 following 10:30 worship in the Sanctuary for the purpose of electing elder Sally Wimberly to fill an unexpired Session term.

Sunday School Adult Classes

First and Second Samuel | Sept. 7 - Nov. 23 | Phifer Library

During the reigns of Saul and David as recorded in First and Second Samuel, the people of Israel experience fear, disappointment, heartache, and betrayal. The compelling theme that weaves its way through these two books and into our lives is the need to balance both the gift of life from God and the promise of God’s steadfast love with the ever-present human temptation to take control and usurp God’s authority.

September 7 class recording

Lessons from the Lectionary | Sept. 7 - Nov. 23 | 2nd floor conference room | led by Caitlin Wallace-Rowland

Join us as we deep-dive into the lectionary scriptures of the day’s service. This discussion-based class will use commentaries and other resources to guide us as we learn about the week’s text—reading it together, discussing what we think it means, how we can connect it to our lives, and what we think God is calling us to do. Together we will add greater depth to our understanding of the scripture behind each week’s sermon.

Sunday School for all ages takes place at 9:30 a.m.

See scapc.org/sunday-school for details.

Welcome, New Members!

Please join us in welcoming Stephanie and Derek Nettles and children Elli and Eian; as well as Leslie Williamson, all of whom joined SCAPC on August 31.
