Dear Friends in Christ,

On behalf of the vestry and Discernment Committee, we joyfully announce that the Reverend Daniel J. Reeves has accepted the call to serve as the fifth rector of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Goochland, Virginia.

Daniel’s warmth, sense of humor, intelligence, humility, and reverence for liturgy was evident to us from our first interaction. He deeply cares about people and about ministry, and we believe that God has called Daniel to St. Mary’s to join us as we live out our mission to worship and learn together, welcome all people, and serve the needs of others in gratefulness of God’s love and grace revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. As one reference stated, “Daniel is a priest with extraordinary gifts for ministry and, more importantly, he is a faithful Christian and a really good person.” At St. Mary’s, we hold most dear the people, the place, the worship, and the work, and Daniel will not only honor these core values but help us build upon them.

Daniel currently serves as the associate rector of Christ Church in Raleigh, North Carolina, a 3,300-member congregation in the heart of downtown Raleigh. He manages several ministries at Christ Church, most notably the 20s-40s young adult ministry and Christian formation programs. Previously, he served as the interim associate rector of Holy Comforter Episcopal in Burlington, N.C., and as curate at St. Luke’s Episcopal in Durham, N.C. His diocesan work includes serving on the Commission on Ministry for the Priesthood, Mission Resource Support Team, and Diocesan Transition Committee.

Daniel holds a Master of Theological Studies from Duke Divinity School and a post-graduate diploma in Anglican Studies from Virginia Theological Seminary. He also completed clinical pastoral education at the Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where he co-led a spirituality group for veterans with PTSD and provided pastoral care to patients in the surgical intensive care unit.

Over the past seven months, the committee reviewed dozens of referrals and applications; held numerous interviews; and welcomed a few finalists to campus. During their campus visits, the finalists conducted a worship service, as well as met with staff, wardens, and committee members. The committee worked collaboratively and prayerfully throughout the search process and was guided by the hopes laid out in our parish survey, as well as by those conveyed in numerous conversations with the congregation. It is with our unanimous support that we eagerly announce this call.

Daniel will join us as rector in March 2025. He will be joined by his wife Krysta, son Paxton, and beloved dog Mosby. Those of us who have met Daniel have felt the joy and enthusiasm he brings to his work; we look forward to sharing that joy with all of you!

Faithfully,

We leave you with the following thoughts from Daniel. We will have more to share from him in the new year.

 Dear St. Mary’s,

It is with a grateful heart that I write to you. From my first conversations with the Discernment Committee and the Wardens of St. Mary’s, I could feel the love you all have for each other and your dedication to the work the Holy Spirit has called you to do. I am so excited to join you in this work. Thank you for your prayers of discernment through this process and to the tireless efforts of the Discernment Committee. Krysta, Paxton, and I plan to join you all sometime before Lent. In this Advent season, I wait in hope and in joyful expectation for what God is leading us into. May God continue to guide our steps in all peace and joy!

– Daniel
