Turning Struggle into Steadfastness
Stories of struggle are nothing new to the church.
From the persecution faced by early Christians to civil rights movements led by faith leaders, the church has found its strength in times of unrest. The COVID-19 pandemic is yet another chapter in this long history, both nothing unique and yet entirely different. Through it all, Disciples have been steadfast. By launching emerging congregations, they have stepped up to care for communities in need.
But they don’t do it alone. With the help of regional and general ministries, these brave leaders have been provided with facilities to conduct their outreach activities and with online educational opportunities, such as Leadership Academy.
By making a gift to the 2022 Pentecost Offering, received in most congregations on Sundays, May 29 and June 5, you can ensure that the new church movement continues to prosper in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Each year, half of these gifts go to your own region to support local new church development. The other half goes to New Church Ministry, which trains, equips, assists, and multiplies new church leaders across the United States and Canada through programs such as coaching, New Church Hacks, and Water the Plants.
Planning, nurturing, and sustaining new places of worship is part of the Disciples’ vision – participation in this Special Day Offering helps this vision come to life.

Iowa State Fair Hymn Sing
As in past years, the Christian Church in the Upper Midwest is providing a twice daily hymn sing at The Old Church during the Iowa State Fair. The popular ministry expanded last year to include a Children's Time on the lawn, introducing children to a Bible story through storytelling, crafts, and song.
Many hands are needed to carry out this ministry! If you are available and open to joining in the State Fair Hymn Sing fun, please contact Don Hiscox at don.b.hiscox@gmail.com or 515-865-1770. We need 22 song leaders and 22 accompanists to make it happen!
Gail Aurand is coordinating the Children's Time. We need 11 congregations to provide volunteers and funding for each day's lesson and craft. If you can help with this ministry, please contact Gail at gailaurand@gmail.com or 660-785-0349.

These past few years have been strenuous for our community. With issues on top of the pandemic such as police violence, the threat of war, and other traumatic experiences, the need to not only understand how trauma affects individuals but how to walk alongside those who are experiencing the responses to trauma is crucial in today’s age. The term ‘Trauma Informed Ministry’ is becoming more commonplace for congregations. Join this webinar from New Church Ministry to see how you can utilize the work from the field of Trauma Informed Care.

How can we talk with people who differ from us politically, theologically or culturally? Are there ways we can engage issues of public concern in our congregations so that we can listen, respect, and learn from each other?
Based on her book, Preaching in the Purple Zone: Ministry in the Red-Blue Divide, Rev. Dr. Leah Schade will introduce participants to deliberative dialogue in “The Purple Zone” to find common ground within the red/blue divide in our congregations. Deliberative dialogue is a form of civil discourse that brings people together from diverse experiences and viewpoints to share their concerns about a topic, discern their shared values, and suggest steps for moving forward. Deliberative dialogue is an opportunity to listen deeply and share openly and respectfully. In this way, we can build community, even when there are strongly held opinions from many perspectives.
Rev. Dr. Leah Schade is the Associate Professor of Preaching and Worship at Lexington Theological Seminary. An ordained Lutheran minster for 20 years, Dr. Schade earned both her MDiv and PhD degrees from Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia (now United Lutheran Seminary). She has pastored churches in suburban, urban, and rural contexts. She is the author of five book, and is currently conducting a longitudinal research study about ministry, preaching, and social issues. She is also the EcoPreacher blogger for Patheos. In December 2021, Dr. Schade was elected 2nd Vice President of the Academy of Homiletics, a three-year position that will culminate with serving as President of the Academy in 2024.
