Changing Perspective

Rev. Josh Patty

Regional Minister & President

Is your congregation different today than it was 10 years ago?

Some cannot answer this question – they have started participating in the past 10 years.  For others, it can be uncomfortable. There’s grief – we remember valued friends no longer with us. In many congregations, though, fewer people gather for worship and their average age is older.

This is not universal. Studies suggest about 1 in 5 congregations are growing, including some notable congregations in our region. In many places, though, I hear a common question, “Why don’t as many people come to church anymore?”

Recently, I was struck by an observation made by two researchers in religious leadership and religious congregations. Nancy Ammerman and Carl Dudley note, “One of the first things we discovered about adapting congregations was that they simply notice what is going on around them. Declining congregations often barely realize that the world has changed.”

Which perspective do you think your church has? What examples can you give? How has your congregation adapted to what’s going around us? How has your church not changed?

Change for change's sake is not a virtue. And key parts of Christian teaching and practice have always been intentional counterpoints to what is going on in the world. As exemplified by key faith leaders in the Bible and throughout the centuries, there are ways we can meet others where they are as we invite them to experience faith.

What do you think we need to notice in the world around us? How will this impact our ministry? What adaptations will help share God’s love, forgiveness, and peace in this time and place?

Remember Your Baptism: Lenten Video Reflections

Regional Minister Joshua Patty is offering a series of video messages this Lenten season. “Remember Your Baptism” invites us to celebrate our participation in Christ’s church (even those who have not yet been baptized). Feel free to include any or all of these short videos in your worship services, education classes, ministry devotional materials, and/or share them on social media. Find the link to the first video here, and the full playlist here.

Pentecost Special Offering - May 17 & 24

On Pentecost, the Spirit did not stay in one place. It moved outward - across languages, cultures, and every barrier people believed separated them. In that moment, a new kind of community was born, shaped by courage, generosity, and love. That same Spirit is still moving today. In a world where many people feel uncertain, divided, or disconnected from one another, the Church is called to be a different kind of presence. Half of the Pentecost Offering helps support New Church Ministry, and half stays in the Upper Midwest to support our new and emerging congregations, such as The Stable, a fully on-line church. For more information and resources.

Pastoral Word on the Crisis in Iran and Its Wider Impact

Executive Director, Week of Compassion

In recent days, we have watched with deep concern as the conflict involving Iran has escalated. I write to you today from the perspective of Week of Compassion...The Middle East is already a fragile region...our partners are working in communities where families already struggle to access basic necessities...It means that a crisis that may seem distant is having very real consequences for the most vulnerable...one of the first and most immediate impacts is on food...Our partners are concerned that humanitarian access will become more difficult in the days ahead. Ecumenical Conversations

Disciples and United Church of Christ

Leaders from the Disciples and the UCC met to strengthen our historic partnership. That partnership is rooted in a shared ecumenical spirit and a history of collaboration in mission and ministry. Over many decades, the two churches have maintained close relationships through theological dialogue, joint mission initiatives, and participation in ecumenical and interfaith organizations. One of those is Global Ministries, the joint international mission body. Read the full news release here.

Ecumenical Conversations

Disciples and Evangelical Lutheran Church of America

Leaders from the Disciples and the ELCA met in February for their latest session of their ongoing bilateral dialogue. Under the theme "Reforming and Restoring Through Scripture," the gathering continued a decades-long commitment to deepen mutual understanding and shared witness. The presentations generated sustained conversation on authority, the role of creeds, the place of the Old Testament, and the function of scripture. Read the full news release.
