Congratulations to Two Special Award Winners
Perry Greene, Ph.D. , our vice president for diversity and inclusion, has been awarded the 2019 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Recognition Award for his exceptional impact on our students and the community, bringing people together to build understanding and address intolerance.
You may have met Stephanie Espina , director of freshman admissions at Adelphi, who travels around the country to share the Adelphi story. She has just been awarded the 2019 ATHENA Young Professional Leadership Award , which recognizes exemplary women leaders on Long Island.
With a Mentor, Students Reach Their Highest Potential

Adelphi's Mentoring Program , which launched in 2014, offers undergraduate students a sense of belonging, guidance and the extra help that they need to stay ahead of college life and academics. All students at any phase of their undergraduate career can benefit from mentoring.

Monroe Marshall ’17 , who majored in neuroscience, became one of the program's biggest supporters.

“ I benefited a lot from Adelphi's mentoring support, so I was very excited when Professor West gave a presentation to our group. And when she spoke to me about developing an LGBTQ+ sector of the Mentoring Program, that meant so much to me. Being part of that community, I knew how important this would be to many students who are made to feel like they have to hide or be wary of expressing an important part of who they are. One day, I really want to return as a mentor to future students , ” said Marshall. 
Mentoring, the Foundation of Great Career Opportunities

Lauren Bury is a transfer student who is working on completing her B.B.A. in Management with a specialization in marketing. After she joined Delta Sigma Pi, she met Neil Halloran , director of internships, who became her initial mentor. Through Halloran's business connections, Bury secured her first internship. And now, in the last few months, Halloran has secured a business mentor partner for Bury, too—Bernadette Finnican, director, IBM Global Financing.

Bury says, “ My mentor is very inspiring and amazing to work with. As a woman in the business world, she has offered me terrific insights. Her job is so big and yet she has found time to answer my questions and connect me with a colleague in marketing. She's also a mother, so she really makes me feel like ‘You can have it all!’ Of course, all these opportunities were made possible by Neil. I'm so thankful for his support .”
Peer Mentors: Easing the Transition for International Students

When Aman Ahmed arrived at Adelphi from India to study business management, he was matched with an international peer mentor . It was such a positive experience for him that he became a peer mentor himself.

“ I was really happy to have a mentor during my initial years at Adelphi. A new place brought new challenges—things were difficult. My mentor bridged the gap between my fellow students and the professors. The major help was navigating through eCampus. I’m very grateful to Wendy Badala, who is all our international students' foster mother. She believed in us and gave us the opportunity to mentor other students and, most importantly, she was there for all of us. For me, mentoring is not a job; I am just carrying forward a tradition of helping others and making our institution more diverse and open to the international community ,” Ahmed says.
Behind Top Students, Mentors Who Make a Difference

Sometimes a mentoring pair forms between two people from two different areas , as is the case with Daniela Agudelo , a senior communication disorders major, and her mentor, Nicole Levy , associate director of events in our admissions office. But it's still a win-win!

Agudelo and Levy say that, “ The Adelphi Mentoring Program has given us a unique opportunity to form a friendship between two people whose paths may never have crossed on their own. We learn from each other, support one another and celebrate our accomplishments together. We are both so thankful to Chotsani West for facilitating these relationships and a wonderful program on our campus. ”
Spotlight on Chemistry and a Winning Research Duo

Under Assistant Professor Ivan Dempsey Hyatt, Ph.D. 's tutelage, Marly Medard ’18 , who majored in chemistry , discovered a chemical reaction that resulted in an intriguing molecule sample. This set off its own chain reaction: It gave Medard the opportunity to conduct research at Long Island's Brookhaven National Laboratory with the lab's scientists and equipment.

“Thanks to the help of skilled veteran researchers, I had an amazing experience. Dr. Hyatt and I did a lot of preparation work before we left. I learned that as a scientist, it isn't wise to fear problems or obstacles—just solve them and move on,” Medard says.
Today, Dr. Hyatt's hope is that Medard will get to publish her data in a professional journal.

Announcing Our Performing Arts Spring Lineup
To celebrate Garden City's 150th anniversary, the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center (Adelphi PAC) is honored to welcome home Garden City native John Tesh for an evening of storytelling and song. With six music Emmys, two Grammy nominations, three gold records, seven public television specials and more than 8 million records sold, his recording and live concert career continues to thrive. The Garden City High School Chorus will be joining Tesh for a special performance.

So we invite you to come celebrate with us this spring—enjoy 40 great shows and concerts in our spring lineup .
