Volume 3 | November 2017
Dear Colleagues,

Our Ea rly Action deadline of December 1  is just around the corner and we’re witnessing an incredible applicant pool take shape.

Incredible geographic reach . To date, applicants span 43 states and 57 countries.

Incredible aspirations . Applications continue to surge in programs like Neuroscience (a pre-med favorite), Theater (actors and set designers aplenty) and Exercise Science (that perfect competitive edge for physical therapy).

Incredible achievements . We’re on pace for a record-setting year of applicants and achievement, sporting our highest average academic measures to date.

Incredible stories. The most impressive part of our applicant pool? Their personal stories.
  • A student who’s overcome depression and learned to conquer her learning disability
  • A first-generation student who co-founded a vegan club in her school community
  • A youth ambassador for the Tourette Association of America
  • An Oxford summer medical program graduate
  • A student serving as president of his school’s Model United Nations
And the list goes on.

As you work with your students on building their college lists, consider Adelphi University. With personalized programs to meet student interests (read more below!), Adelphi lets personal stories grow and thrive among our distinguished community members.

In the season of being thankful, I thank each of you for the hard work you do each and every day, guiding our future scholars into their next exciting chapter.

Why Apply to Adelphi? Our Top 10 Reasons.
Our Proximity to New York City
Adelphi’s main campus in Garden City is just 23 miles, and less than one hour's train ride, from New York City’s cultural and internship opportunities.
Small Class Sizes and Low Student-to-Faculty Ratio for a Personalized Experience
With an average undergrad class size of 21 and a 10:1 student-to-faculty ratio, a student's Adelphi journey will be shaped to support each student as an individual.
Unique Levermore Global Scholars (LGS) Program With Ties
to the United Nations
Whether it's participating in invitation-only briefings at the United Nations headquarters in New York City, studying globalization while climbing the Great Wall of China or investigating issues of religion while traveling by camel across the Moroccan desert, LGS will enrich students' lives.
Advanced Honors College and a New Honors College Scholarship
Where every day promotes academic excellence and cultural awareness, the Adelphi Honors College becomes a student's home away from home. And new for Fall 2018, our generous Honors College scholarship helps top students find an affordable home with tremendous career connections.
Generous Scholarships and Financial Aid
Adelphi awarded more than $67 million in scholarships and grants to 86 percent of full-time undergraduates last year. And new for Fall 2018, our $3,000 Enhanced Assistance Grant   helps students afford the personalized education offered by Adelphi.
Specialized Support for Students With Disabilities
If your student has autism spectrum disorder or language-based learning disabilities and/or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), making the move from high school to higher education can seem especially challenging. We offer two nationally recognized, highly individualized support programs— Bridges to Adelphi and the Learning Resource Program to help st udents eliminate barriers and fulfill their goals.
97 Percent Career and Grad School Placement Rate Within a Year of Graduation
With nationally ranked, high-impact programs like computer science, game design, international studies, art therapy and graphic design (to name a few!), it's no wonder our students are in high demand upon graduation.
Ranked Among Safest Colleges in New York
Our campus is both a welcoming and safe place to live. Adelphi’s beautifully landscaped 75-acre Garden City campus, a registered arboretum, was just named Best Public Garden on Long Island 2017 and ranked the 13th-safest campus in the state of New York.
Recognized As Transfer-Friendly by the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Roll
We're proud of this distinction— a recognition given to only 2.5 percent of universities nationwide.
Our Overall Personalized Approach to Education—Where Every Student Creates Their Own Path
With 50-plus programs of study to choose from, students can mix and match our majors and minors, study abroad or spend a semester in Manhattan. We work to personalize every student's Adelphi experience.
Reminder: Early Action Deadline Approaching
Adelphi’s Non-Binding Early Action Deadline is fast approaching—December 1. Students who apply Early Action are among the first students considered for a wide range of generous scholarships and need-based financial assistance. For more information, visit adelphi.edu/earlyaction.
Spotlight on Adelphi Academics
Teaching and learning physics can be challenging for teachers and students alike. And this is why it’s especially uplifting when Matthew Wright, Ph.D., assistant professor of physics, who was named Adelphi's Professor of the Year in 2015, shares his teaching philosophy—which emphasizes love, kindness and understanding—in a piece for Inside Higher Ed . If this piques your interest, learn more about our world-class physics program and engineering partnership with Columbia University.

Making News at Adelphi
Leonard Achan '99 credits Adelphi with start to compassionate and creative career
Newsday  devoted the cover of its Sunday LI Life section and six full pages to the story and art of Lenny Achan , who graduated from Adelphi with a degree in nursing. A "lifelong artist rooted in graffiti and a nurse turned healthcare executive and entrepreneur," Achan is currently chief innovation officer at Manhattan's Hospital for Special Surgery and the first nurse to join the Adelphi University Board of Trustees. "Very little has taught me more about how precious life is than nursing did," he told Newsday , which noted that in addition to exhibiting in galleries, Achan "uses art to put people at ease and brighten their days."
