Volume 5 | January 2018
Dear Colleagues,

How did you spend your summers while in school?

I think back to my summers and I remember fun-filled vacations with family, relaxing trips to beautiful Long Island beaches and escaping the summer heat in the air-conditioned Broadway theaters in nearby New York City (my special mother-daughter memories!).

But there was a summer experience that stuck out to me as one of a kind: a career explorations camp at a university in Rhode Island.

It was my first time away from home. My first time on a college campus. And my first time truly diving into an academic area that interested me. The result? I walked away energized and confident for my studies in college.

As you begin hosting sophomore and junior meetings with your students, or as you guide students ready to begin the transfer process, consider how they'll spend their summer months.

Are they ready for a hands-on academic experience near the excitement of New York City?

Our community offers an incredible array of summer courses and programs for every type of student. Read on for an inside glimpse of summer at Adelphi.

It's never too early to start thinking summer!

Best,

Spotlight on Two Amazing Pre-College Experiences
My experience in Adelphi's pre-college program helped shape the direction I’ve taken for the past four years. It was an eye-opener when I learned that many others in my area were just as invested in game development as me. When I returned to my senior year in high school, I chose to pursue my degree at Adelphi. Since then I've had many opportunities to really share, learn and get creative with others, and it has been an experience like no other!

Evan Leider took the pre-college Video Game Programming course in summer 2013 with Lee Stemkoski, Ph.D., professor of mathematics and computer science. He worked as a teaching assistant for the 2015 and 2016 summer programs, and has co-authored a textbook with Dr. Stemkoski that is used for both our pre-college program and our Video Game Design course. He's currently a senior majoring in computer and management information systems with a minor in video game design.
Doing the pre-college nursing program at Adelphi really showed me how wonderful Adelphi is! I learned not only about their nursing program—in a classroom and through trips to local hospitals—but I learned about the campus, about friendships, about time management, but above all else, I realized how much I truly wanted to be a nurse.

Sophia Muratore attended the pre-college Introduction to Nursing course in summer 2016 and is currently enrolled as a first-year nursing student at Adelphi. She credits one person in particular for inspiring her to pursue nursing: Irene Auteri Ferguson '79 , coordinator of special projects for the College of Nursing and Public Health, who, she says, “was super-attentive to everyone. She showed me that there are many different types of nurses, and hearing her nursing experiences made me even more determined to become a nurse."
