Hi Calvary Family,
This week, the citizens of the USA elected Donald Trump as their 47th President. In light of all the fears that our country would not be able to execute a fair and functional election and a peaceful transition, we should all be grateful to God that those fears have been allayed. Let’s all be thankful for the gracious and mature manner in which President Biden and the Democratic nominee, Kamala Harris, conceded the election and congratulated President Trump.
Let me remind you all of the Spirit’s words to Pastor Timothy, expressed through the pen of Paul in 1 Timothy 2:1-6:
“I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth. For there is one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus. He gave his life to purchase freedom for everyone. This is the message God gave to the world at just the right time.
These instructions are not only to be followed during seasons of transition of political power. They need to be followed regardless of whether we believe the right person was elected or not. We should not only be praying for the President-elect but for all our political leaders. As I mentioned last Sunday, our belief in the sovereignty of God and our trust in the goodness of God to those who belong to him - and the mercy of God towards those who have rejected him - prevents us from being hopeful or fearful over human governing authorities.
The Psalmist reminds us that “Some trust in chariots and some in horses” (i.e., political and military power), but we (God’s people) trust in the name of the Lord our God.
Consider these words from the prophet Jeremiah:
Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.”
While we must guard ourselves against becoming too enamored with any human authority or personality, we must also be on guard against becoming fearful of the same. The Spirit instructs us in Philippians 4:6-7
“Do not be anxious about anything. Instead, in every situation, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, tell your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”
Finally, I want to encourage my church family at this time to examine our hearts and ask the Spirit to show us to what degree we have allowed ourselves to be “discipled” by the news media, political pundits, and politicians rather than by the word of God. If we find ourselves either overjoyed at this election or overwhelmed with anxiety because of this election, we have very likely taken our eyes off of the Lord and His word.
