St. John’s name traces back to its earliest church and the town’s German immigrant roots.
After farmer John Hack arrived in 1837, he and several local families helped establish St. John the Evangelist Parish, which led to Lake County’s first Roman Catholic church and supported bilingual education for German-speaking settlers.
Today, that heritage continues at the Shrine of Christ’s Passion, where visitors follow a half-mile pathway featuring 40 life-size bronze figures, one of Northwest Indiana’s most distinctive attractions.
