Valparaiso’s place as the Porter County seat may have come down to a well-timed land donation.

When Porter County was being organized, two local landowners reportedly competed to have the new county seat established near their property. One strengthened his case by donating land for the courthouse—and his location was ultimately selected.

That decision helped establish the center of what would become downtown Valparaiso, with the Porter County Courthouse still standing at the heart of the city today.
