June Morning Meeting: Protecting Our Coastline, Celebrating Our Community

Embrace • Explore • Experience • Enjoy Downtown Oceanside

June's Morning Meeting brought together community members, business owners, residents, and local leaders to learn about one of Oceanside's most significant coastal resilience efforts while also receiving updates on upcoming events, volunteer opportunities, and community initiatives.

We were pleased to welcome Jayme Timberlake, Coastal Zone Administrator for the City of Oceanside, who shared an update on the RE:BEACH project and the work underway to help protect and preserve Oceanside's beaches for future generations. Attendees also received updates on USA 250 activities, the Ambassador Program, community partnerships, and exciting events happening throughout downtown this summer.

RE:BEACH: Protecting One of Oceanside's Greatest Assets

One of Oceanside's greatest assets is our coastline, and this month's presentation gave attendees an overview of the work underway to protect and preserve it for future generations.

Jayme Timberlake shared an update on the City's RE:BEACH project, an innovative effort to address chronic beach erosion and strengthen the long-term resilience of Oceanside's shoreline. Oceanside's beaches serve millions of residents and visitors each year and play a vital role in our local economy, recreational opportunities, environmental health, and overall quality of life.

The RE:BEACH project combines several strategies, including beach nourishment, shoreline improvements, and an offshore artificial reef designed to help retain sand and improve beach stability over time. Attendees learned about the extensive engineering, scientific research, environmental review, and community engagement efforts that have helped shape the project to date.

Conceptual rendering of the RE:BEACH pilot project, which includes an offshore artificial reef, shoreline headlands, and beach nourishment elements designed to help retain sand and strengthen coastal resilience.

Jayme also highlighted several important milestones:

• The City's successful efforts to move annual harbor dredging from spring to fall to help retain sand longer on Oceanside beaches.

• Continued implementation of the SCOUP (Sand Compatibility Opportunistic Use Program), which repurposes suitable sand from local construction projects for beach nourishment.

• A $1.8 million California Coastal Commission grant supporting environmental monitoring and project evaluation.

• A recently completed U.S. Army Corps of Engineers study recommending additional long-term sand placement to help restore Oceanside's shoreline.

The project remains in the planning, environmental review, permitting, and fundraising stages, but momentum continues to build. The City is actively pursuing state and federal funding opportunities while advancing the design work needed to move the project forward.

Thank you to Jayme and the City of Oceanside team for sharing this important update and for the work being done to protect one of our community's most valuable resources.

Embrace: Get Involved

Celebrating Our Hometown Heroes

Community support for the Hometown Heroes Banner Program exceeded all expectations.

What began with a goal of 50 street pole banners quickly grew to 62 sponsored banners honoring veterans and first responders. These banners will soon be displayed throughout downtown Oceanside and remain up through Veterans Day.

The stories shared by participating families have been inspiring and serve as a powerful reminder of the service, sacrifice, and commitment represented throughout our community.

Ambassador Program Off to a Great Start

Our Ambassador Program is officially underway in partnership with Visit Oceanside, and the response has been fantastic.

Ambassadors are stationed near the Oceanside Pier, welcoming visitors and helping them discover everything downtown Oceanside has to offer. From recommending restaurants and shops to sharing information about local attractions and events, ambassadors help create a positive first impression for thousands of visitors each year.

We're always looking for additional volunteers. If you've been looking for a meaningful way to support your community, we'd love to have you join us.

Volunteers Needed for USA 250

Planning continues for Oceanside's Independence Parade and USA 250 Festival on June 27, and volunteers are still needed to help support this community-wide celebration.

From assisting with parade logistics to helping at the festival, volunteers play a vital role in making these events successful. Thank you to everyone who has already signed up to help.

USA 250 Student Art Project

Students from South Oceanside Elementary School recently participated in a collaborative art project celebrating America's 250th anniversary.

The completed artwork is now displayed near City Council Chambers and serves as a wonderful example of how community celebrations can engage and inspire the next generation. Special thanks to the students, educators, and partners who helped bring the project to life.

Building for the Future

One of the themes that emerged throughout the morning was the importance of long-term investment in Oceanside's future.

Whether through coastal resilience projects, community partnerships, volunteer programs, or public celebrations, organizations across Oceanside continue to work together to strengthen our community, support local businesses, and create experiences that benefit both residents and visitors.
