Hello, alumni, supporters, parents and friends of CEOE,
As we all return home to friends and family to celebrate Thanksgiving this week, I want to express my gratitude for each and every one of you, who together make up the larger CEOE community. While educating students at all levels will always be our focus, this semester we have also had some remarkable success bringing the research done by our faculty and students to the public.
Associate Professor in the School of Marine Science and Policy Danielle Dixson was on
Science Friday
last week to share work she and her lab have done investigating how 3-D printed corals can help reefs regenerate. A.R. Siders, a new faculty member in UD's Disaster Research Center and the Department of Geography and Spatial Sciences, has been quoted in many stories like this one in the
New York Times
on the dangers of rising seas and the need to discuss managed retreat. And SMSP Director Mark Moline and I were quoted on
WHYY
when Sen. Tom Carper joined us on the Lewes campus to announce a new grant earned by two SMSP researchers, Jon Cohen and Tobias Kukulka, to study microplastics in our local waters and their potential impact on blue crabs.
Everything we do, from our research to our education of undergraduates, is done with an eye to making an impact on the world. We are all encouraged when work here is picked up by the media, knowing it will reach more people and have a bigger effect. You can help us in that mission by doing what you are best suited to do: being our champion in your own communities and sharing the work with your peers.
This issue of Discover Our World should give you plenty of things to talk about. It has been a busy fall. I hope you are all enjoying the season, and have a Happy Thanksgiving!
Warm regards,
